It's hard to describe how much I've come to utterly loathe and despise the fact that almost all paid & perpetually-licensed software has moved to recurring subscription models.
Sick & tired of this rent-seeking crap and being squeezed by companies like this.

Yes, you can get a perpetual license, but 1. it's not discounted, and 2. it's only the 'standard' edition with significant limitations.

You can't even buy Parallels anymore; It's a RENTAL

Vmware Fusion is FREE and it natively supports Windows 11. It has a virtual TPM module. Nuff Said!

I have used both fusion and parallels. Fusion works, parallels is easier to install and maintain and faster. Fusion is free. Parallels I tried the pro subscription version and the perpetual version. Currently I use the parallels perpetual version and it works fine and a bit better than fusion. I keep the same version and upgrade every 3-4 years. so it comes out to about $15/year, which I am willing to pay for the smoother operations. I dont think it is worth $50/year subscription version and dont need it either since I only run 1 program (quicken windows) which is superior to the mac version and for several years the only version that existed. BTW, they "upgrade" their version once a year, to encourage you to upgrade their perpetual version once a year.

You can buy the lifetime license for about 240 bucks. I guess it depends on how much you really need it.

Made the mistake of buying a Parallels non-subscription license when I had an MBP M1. Upgraded to an M4 Mini (my use case changed) and the Parallels license would not transfer over. Took that as a lesson and moved to Fusion which is free. Works for me so far.
What! Why would it not transfer? Both are macos!

I also had Parallels for a couple of years, but wasn't using it as much as I thought I would. Cancelled the subscription a year ago and haven't missed it at all. Good to know there are free options out there, I'll look into those.

I know silicon Macs are leaps and bounds above the old intel... but I sure do miss Bootcamp Intel Macs. Apple made the best windows machine with their specific drivers etc.

I've been using VMware fusion since. It works fine and I'm use to VMware from work. It also lets the kids play Minecraft windows edition no issues.

Quicken is the reason we might be getting this. It's still not feature parity with windows? Also, seeing perpetual is $200+, how are you getting for 15/yr?

Fusion is great!
Any tips on making the vm not grow in size. Somehow it went from 4gb install and grew to 40. I wiped and reinstalled. Some weird bloat. Maybe some stupid one drive synch I just need to disable Fusion is more seamless but free is free and better for me for now.

We expect them to perpetually update and secure our software, on their dime—that's just a bad business model for everyone. In the era where you installed a program and it wasn't connected to the whole world via the internet and collaboration, it made sense to sell a license. They can't just sell it and forget it anymore now though, so they need income to pay developers for upkeep. Whether they are charging a reasonable subscription rate is the real question—tech companies aren't exactly known for paying slave wages to their employees.
Oh, and also the return on your 401k is also a result of exactly this kind of practice. You want endless profit for your retirement, you just don't want it to come from customers? Where else would it come from?

Because of people with essentially no knowledge suggesting to people with absolutely zero knowledge that Parallels is somehow "better" without any usable explanation of how.

It's also a brand that is commonly promoted as Mac-specific; there's a significant portion of the population that enjoys hating Windows for reasons they can't quite elaborate and that kind of person eats this up. The price probably even draws a lot of those people in because that makes it feel premium to them (free is for poor people, eww).

It all started with Microsoft office subscription crap. Now sub model spreads like a pandemic. Vote with your wallet. Fusion all the way.

Parellels has come a long way from where it was 5-10 years ago and is worth using, or just get a PC as well.

I guess it depends what you use it for. Parallels is a better product but if you just need to casually do stuff in Windows it's not really necessary.
What I don't get here is do you have access to it for a year, or you have a year of updates but can still use it after that?
