This 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro stands out for its mini LED display, strong speakers, and workstation cooling, making it especially appealing for media, editing, and desktop replacement use. The chip still feels fast for everyday work, with plenty of headroom for Parallels, VMs, Docker, and other heavier tasks, and the 16GB and 512GB configuration is viewed as practical for most users. The main concern is refurbished condition, especially battery cycles, cosmetic wear, and unknown internal wear. The return window and included Allstate warranty help reduce that risk, and the current price is widely framed as strong value if the battery is decent.

Not as good, but still good.

The 16 has bigger and more speakers.
I returned my 14 inch and bought the 16 after hearing difference on a display model

Apple used the space for bigger speaker setup, 16 goes deeper. 16 is also 20% more cpu cores so roughly 15% more multicore performance.

M1 is too old to be worth it at this point.

Still solid for most people. But it is not going to be reliable in another 3 years at the rate modern software is being developed.

I'm curious what would happen if I needed to file an AC+ claim with my 14" M1 Max 64GB/2TB. Do they just have loads of those exact mainboards lying around in waiting, or would they 'upgrade' you to a newer gen model with the same RAM/storage config?

...and yes, I still have AC+ on it because to replace it with a new one with 64GB RAM is damn near $4000.

Funny you asked this question, because just yesterday was my last day coverage of my AppleCare+ on my 2018 Mac mini ( Intel i7, 8G Ram, 512GB, 10Gb Ethernet) that I manually upgraded to 64GB RAM. I had this thing covered since I bought it (it was CTO) until last night. The apple care on it wasn't really much, only $34.99/yr, but a few days ago I was thinking about it and I didn't think it was going to be worth if if they're going to stop supporting my Intel MacMini OS wise next year.

Apple did had to replace my Mac mini in 2020 when it would not boot (and it still had the stock 8GB Apple RAM inside, it wasn't modified back then). I basically went to Apple Store, they checked it and verified it wouldn't boot up for them after their "checks".
They took it off my hands and mailed me another one, and I just restored from my Time Machine backup. I figured I had all my AppleCare+ cost easily broke even, and kept paying. And I was doubting that Apple actually kept i7 Intel Mini with 10G Ethernet in stock anymore...

These days you can probably find i7 Intel Mac mini pretty cheap (but probably not with the 10G Ethernet)

Coming back around, weighing the cost of AppleCare+ It really is "insurance" on whether you really want to take the chance of having your high RAM MBP go bust and have to shell out 4K to replace it. I think mine was around $3400 'ish... due to less HD, but I wanted 64G RAM and knew it wasn't upgradeable, but I have external SSD and home network NFS so I didn't want to pay for storage.

It is good to hear that at least will give you MSRP if they mess up their repair, tho. That I didn't know.

this would be a great side-grade for me coming from an m1 16gb 13", but i can't see jumping on another 16GB model when base models from m4 on is matching this.

Always good to get more than 16gb RAM, but as a desktop replacement the 16 is a little more stout in multicore and GPU.

Edit: if given the choice always get more ram is my stance.

Battery replacement...is $199 more like 1/5th when/if you ever choose to do that!!!no need to try to keep taking unnecessary shots with fear mongering half truths
Nobody's "fear-mongering," I'm literally just doing basic math. On a $664 MacBook, a ~$200 battery replacement is roughly a third of the price, and that's today's pricing. How did you even come up with 1/5 there lol?For an M1 machine in 2025 with a possible high cycle count, it's completely reasonable to factor in that you might be dropping on a battery sooner rather than later. Not sure why you're so butthurt about a buyer wanting to consider that.

yeah people are weird. but if it was free buy and return id try it and then return if had a real bad battery. if it was in 90s I'd call it good and rock it.

still a great laptop, but if you do want perfect battery, just buy a new one imo with new battery on a deep sale. they will be coming. this is the start of them. wouldn't surprise me to see a 500 dollar M1 Pro 16 eventually this next month.
