One notice about the beatstep, when used as a controller, it sends strike pressure as velocity in note-on and then immediately sends pressure as aftertouch. This results in every tap having aftertouch whether or not you want it. Pads on newer devices like keylab and minilab behave differently. The initial strike pressure results in velocity but no aftertouch data is sent unless a subsequent increase in pressure is observed. This means no aftertouch unless you press down harder after the first strike. The newer approach allows for more controlled expression. The beatstep is built like a tank though. It is great if not using aftertouch.

Question:

My 11 year old is asking for one for Xmas, but don't know which to get.

What would be a good beginners (and then some) to get him?

TIA

EDIT: If it matters, he plays guitar and his younger brother plays the piano

For piano, astrolab if you don't want to connect to a computer. Keylab is cheaper but also nice but needs laptop and speakers/headphone to run. Great deals overall here though.

If he needs an audiointerface to make music on the PC, the Arturia MiniFuse for $74 is a great deal. He can record his guitar with a mic or even plug straight into it and record there. In most circumstances you need an interface for almost everything listed except for the Astrolab as the other comment mentioned.
The MiniLab 3 Limited Edition Orange $68 would go along great with that if youre looking for a cheap setup.

Please help me understand how this works. The Arturia MiniLab 3 comes with a USB Cable (C/A) and the listing says "USB-C MIDI connects to computers and MIDI Control Center". There is also software and sound samples included. If the goal is to just use the controller with a PC what is needed is included isn't it? Why is an interface needed?

In a nutshell this is how it works. I'm reading what it says on the product.

The MiniLab 3 seems to be a controller, so this is only like a keyboard which is used with virtual instruments. It doesn't say it comes with any instruments on the desciption. There are a lot of free VST instruments on the web. You can also purchase these. So that's the keyboard controller.

The MiniFuse is an interface. That's separate. You need that in order to get the virtual sounds to play from the computer through speakers/headphones or to input something into the computer like a mic or a guitar.

Yes, you need both. Personally, I don't like little controllers like that Keylab with only 25 keys on it. I guess it's ok for a child. I wouldn't buy one with less than 49 full keys for myself.

I have no personal experience with Arturia hardware, but I use the hell out of their software products and have every VST keyboard they make (like $1000 worth). They are a well respected brand. I almost bought one of their interfaces but ended up buying Antelope Audio instead due to a deal at the time. I would not have a problem buying one of their hardware products though.

Hope this helps..

Interface not needed. You plug it in to a computer DAW with built in USB midi interface which is the same for every midi controller.
You use interface to record analog sound into its own tracks.
Minilab 3 also come with Ableton Live Lite. Maybe check out some youtube vid.

Arturia interface is just average at best a step up from the cheap berhinger

Can't speak on that because I haven't had one.
I know the Arturia AudioFuse was well regarded by people that had them.
It's obviously a big step up in price from Behringer or even Arturia cheaper offerings.
I'm still waiting on that rumored Behringer Poly 8, the only hardware synth I'm interested in.

49 Mk3 is still available. Or get a Keylab mini 3 to hold you over for $68.
