While frame generation is (misleadingly) marketed by Nvidia as a performance enhancing feature, it's actually a frame smoothing technology that improves visual smoothness at the cost of worse performance/responsiveness and a decrease in visual fidelity. It can be a useful tool, but only in very specific circumstances. In many cases, turning frame generation on will actually make your experience worse.
Frame generation essentially has the gpu render two frames and then hold them, preventing them being displayed immediately, while it interpolates ai generated frames in between the two rendered frames and then displays them sequentially, spacing them out to maintain frametime consistency. The benefit to this is that, in theory, you can achieve the appearance of visual smoothness corresponding with a higher framerate on hardware not powerful enough to reach said framerate. There are, however, several major drawbacks:
First, since frames are held back in order to allow ai generated frames be displayed in between them, while visual smoothness will be improved, latency and responsiveness actually worsen. Additionally, the overhead of generating the ai frames will decrease your base framerate. If you were to compare a game running at 240fps multi frame gen 4x and a game running at 60fps without frame gen side-by-side, while the mfg game would look far smoother, the 60fps game would actually feel less laggy and more responsive than the "240fps" game. Frame generation is best suited for giving a boost to visual smoothness when your card is already powerful enough to reach high fps in a game, not to improve performance of weaker hardware. Second, enabling frame generation increases vram use, which is a massive problem for a card with only 8gb of vram. An 8gb card will already struggle to run many modern games at 1080p medium settings without raytracing or frame gen, turning frame gen on will make what's already an enormous issue even worse. Third, the ai generated frames often have artifacts and other visual anomalies, which can drastically worsen the visual quality of the game. This largely depends on the specific title, and is much worse if you have a lower base framerate or use a higher multiplier of frame gen. Fourth, multi frame generation is only really useful with higher refresh rate monitors. To maintain response times anywhere even close to playing the game at 60fps without frame gen you need at absolute minimum an 120hz monitor for 2x, 180hz for 3x, and 240hz for 4x.
Frame gen and multiframe gen are primarily useful for playing games where latency doesn't matter much, and the additional visual smoothness is worth the laggier overall experience. Slow paced third person single player games on a high refresh rate monitor where your base framerate is already 70+ fps are prime candidates for using frame generation. While it's not an inherently "bad" feature, since it can be legitimately useful under the right circumstances, frame generation is ultimately FAR more limited in utility than Nvidia would attempt to convince you of. On a card as weak as the rtx 5050, many of those flaws are magnified further, to the point it really shouldn't factor into your purchasing decisions to any meaningful degree.
With regards to this deal, the rtx 5050 at $190 isn't a bad price if you just want something modern and cheap, but it isn't a truly fantastic value either. Keep in mind the 5050 only has pcie x8 rather than x16, so if your motherboard/cpu don't support pcie gen4 or newer you should avoid this card. If you're technologically savvy at all and have a decent processor (intel i5 12400 or better, or amd 5600 or better) on a motherboard supporting resizable bar (also known as smart access memory), I'd generally recommend going for the intel arc b580 12gb at $250 or less (sales at $230 recently) instead. The extra $40 for 12gb of vram is more than worth it if you plan to keep this card for more than a couple of years. Alternatively, you can definitely find better deals in the used market if you're willing to tolerate the additional risk, lack of warranty, and missing out on certain modern features.
Yes, this is the current low end offering from Nvidia. But for perspective, TechPowerUp ranks the performance of this card at 28% higher than the widely regarded 1080p budget king RX 6600, 12% higher than the RTX 3060,and only 3% slower than the RTX 4060. Basically it's on par with an RTX 2080, but with newer features and usies significantly less power. That's a pretty good budget card for $190 in my book.
Great budget GPU. At $190, it might even surpass the RX 6600 at the price/performance/wattage (130W). Get a Walmart refurb "gaming PC", drop this in, sell the stock GPU, add RAM/storage if needed, and you're looking at better than XBOX/PS performance at half the price.
Now, if you have money, a non-proprietary PSU, don't want to deal with selling off components, etc. - then this is not for you. As others have stated, you can pay a bit more and get something more future proof.
It's a new RTX 5050 at 24% off MSRP. For many people upgrading on a budget, it's a good $200 card for 1080P gaming, if your motherboard is PCIe4 or PCIe5. But yes, I would avoid RTX 5050 and RTX 5060 for anyone still on old PCIe3, too much stuttering and really bad 1% lows.
my desktop is 4690k, so should i get 3050 8gb? or 1660 ti? looking for a low TDP card since my PSU is CX430. i was thinking of buying 4060 from zotac refurb since it's TDP is only 115W, fit for my PSU, but is it too much to handle for 4690k? this gpu is my final upgrade, no more spending money since my motherboard only support 4th gen intel cpu. i already own a 12 gen cpu

all of you guys who complains about latency of frame gen, do you only play online competitive shooter or something? I agree 3x and 4x are bad, but 2x frame gen is pretty much magic to me for going from 30 fps to 60 fps for all single player games I play, without any latency issue. yes there is graphic issues around certain HUD elements like cross hair if you move too fast but I gladly trade a small visual fidelity for smoother gameplay

4690K is so old, it will likely limit any modern graphics card. Avoid RTX 3050. If you can get a 1660 Ti or 1660 Super or RX 6600 or similar for under $100 that might be worth it.
Yeah, I was thinking about 1660 Ti before, but Youtube review[youtube.com] said that RTX 3050 8GB version (not the 6GB as that one sucks) has similar 1080p performance as the 1660 Ti, but with new feature like DLSS and longer driver support. Even both has the same TDP. RTX 3050 8GB is a bit more expensive ($20-30 more) than 1660 Ti. but i don't mind paying that extra if it's newer.

I would personally highly recommend upgrading your psu before you even think of getting a gpu upgrade. To the best of my knowledge, even the most recent revisions of the cx430 use a group regulation topography, which was already considered obsolete (and potentially dangerous) a decade ago. Essentially, 12v and 5v being regulated together means that when there's a much higher load on one voltage than the other (as is expected with modern hardware), the voltage can deviate significantly beyond the atx spec. This can damage and drastically reduce the lifespan of connected components, and in some cases even burn cables and start fires (rare, but it does happen). Also, the capacitors used for the cx430 are low quality and only rated for 85C, after so many years I doubt it's capable of reliably delivering its rated wattage anymore. You can get good psus that'll last you a decade easily for a hundred dollars or less.
DLSS4 has multiframe generation. Won't that close the performance gap, even before the gains from ongoing optimization support for new titles?
Frame generation on both NVDA and AMD cards are shit. You want that screen tear so bad it hurts? I have tested both, and AMD cards are much worse on performance, but they both suck.
Stacked the Amex $20 off 60 and some cb. For almost half the price of the 5060 TI (which may never come back in stock), I can live with 8GB vram for a generation. Thanks OP!
