due credit to OP for noting the details of the store credit check. But it is still so dishonest of Menards to advertise in this way, which they have been doing for many, many years.

Do you mean "store credit" the same as "rebate check"? I never noticed they don't charge sales tax.
Also, you can ignore the date deadline for mailing in rebate/receipts. Pointless to use a stamp for a few bucks. I save up a bunch to make it worth the stamp.
First, their rebates don't expire, and they allow you to send in multiple receipts (official policy is one year, but they've taken older ones in my experience). Once you have the certificate, it's as good as cash in-store. You can use it to buy more free after rebate stuff and keep the chain going if you so desire.
The "rebate" is an in-store credit, and they don't hide this fact at all. It clearly states the rebate is in the form of an in-store credit.

I've been doing this program for 26 years and while yes it would be simpler to do it online and send cash, then they couldn't offer as many deals. The intent IS to make it slightly harder so not everyone claims their rebates -- leaving more to the rest of us that don't see it as a problem.
Say what you will about rebate programs, paper/mail submissions, hating a particular company for their practices (Menards is well known for bad labor and environmental behaviors) --- But if any company is willing to give me free stuff and has a history of following through you can bet I will take them up on it regardless who they are.

again, what you failed to address was my main point - "Free" is a completely inaccurate term here. Buy one, get free _______ would be totally accurate. But instead they call the first item free, which is simply not true and is deceptive.

Now you threadcrap (3+ posts and counting in this $2 screwdriver thread alone) about it. Save your energy, go breathe some fresh air, touch some grass, etc. You've wasted way more on this than Capt. Ahab.

Sure there is. Simple point. It's not free and should not be described as "free."
I was out of date on the expiration of the rebate checks, which prompted some helpful responses from you and others on current policies and how people maximize benefit. So thanks, despite the attitude, speculation, and hyperbole.
