"Free after rebate" is such deceptive and intentionally inaccurate advertising. The item is purchased and that money is spent. Getting a store credit (with expiration date!) for possible purchase of other items does not make the original item "free" by any stretch of the word.

due credit to OP for noting the details of the store credit check. But it is still so dishonest of Menards to advertise in this way, which they have been doing for many, many years.

Menards store credits never expire. I have been reusing the same $50 store credit over and over for years to purchase "free" items. If you pay with a store credit they do not charge sales tax so you get all your credit back. Just costs you the price of one stamp for the items.

Right and I sent in two year old receipts recently and had no issues getting the rebate check from it. I do admit they are shady on the words, but I know it and still go there all the time.

Do you mean "store credit" the same as "rebate check"? I never noticed they don't charge sales tax.

Also, you can ignore the date deadline for mailing in rebate/receipts. Pointless to use a stamp for a few bucks. I save up a bunch to make it worth the stamp.

These indeed are more a "reward" than a "rebate", however never expiring makes it a great reward for a day like this for me. I have enough "rebate" checks to cover these and it will roll ( I will get the same amount back less the sales tax, because at the the Govt casino, they always win)..

You clearly have an axe to grind, and your post is highly inaccurate.
First, their rebates don't expire, and they allow you to send in multiple receipts (official policy is one year, but they've taken older ones in my experience). Once you have the certificate, it's as good as cash in-store. You can use it to buy more free after rebate stuff and keep the chain going if you so desire.
The "rebate" is an in-store credit, and they don't hide this fact at all. It clearly states the rebate is in the form of an in-store credit.

Rebates state you have 1 year to send them in, You can send as many as you want in one envelope with 1 simple smaller than post card sized form to fill out total. You can track online. They are treated as coupons not payment so they reduce your amount of tax owed when used on future purchases. you can keep rolling them indefinitely. they never expire. If you shop menards you are foolish not to use them to get some of the side things or larger discounts or the 11 months of 11% they have offered for the last many years.

I've been doing this program for 26 years and while yes it would be simpler to do it online and send cash, then they couldn't offer as many deals. The intent IS to make it slightly harder so not everyone claims their rebates -- leaving more to the rest of us that don't see it as a problem.

Say what you will about rebate programs, paper/mail submissions, hating a particular company for their practices (Menards is well known for bad labor and environmental behaviors) --- But if any company is willing to give me free stuff and has a history of following through you can bet I will take them up on it regardless who they are.

Mine expired. They sent me a "credit check" with an expiration on it. A number of years ago.

Yes, I don't like Menard's for this specific reason. That's it. I stopped shopping there after they fooled me once with it, and the advertising was absolutely not clear — they have updated since but have continued the deceptive phrasing. They sent me a credit check with an expiration date on it. Years ago. I moved away from the area that had Menards nearby and then the credit expired.
again, what you failed to address was my main point - "Free" is a completely inaccurate term here. Buy one, get free _______ would be totally accurate. But instead they call the first item free, which is simply not true and is deceptive.

There's nothing to address, you're literally moaning about a $2 pocket screwdriver that's "free" after rebate, yet somehow this brings up horrible memories about how you moved away a long time ago and couldn't use your $2 rebate before it expired...which they don't even do for rebates.

Now you threadcrap (3+ posts and counting in this $2 screwdriver thread alone) about it. Save your energy, go breathe some fresh air, touch some grass, etc. You've wasted way more on this than Capt. Ahab.

Sure there is. Simple point. It's not free and should not be described as "free."
I was out of date on the expiration of the rebate checks, which prompted some helpful responses from you and others on current policies and how people maximize benefit. So thanks, despite the attitude, speculation, and hyperbole.
