They use better quality oils and wax than a lot of the cheaper store brand ones. There are better candles and there are worse, but honestly it's about scent and throw.
It's nothing to break out a spreadsheet over trying to figure out, but if you like candles there's a reason YC is one of the better products.
Really, if you are candle fanatic, you'd probably better off making your own. For most casual use, these are fine.

I was just at a Yankee candle store, apparently they used to use parrafin as a wax base but are switching to a natural wax blend which should burn cleaner. We bought a couple of the new ones, but I assume these are the old stock.
