Yeah, I guess they didn't like that I pointed out that this product is from a Chinese company with a website that doesn't work and wants you to install their shady app with access to your Google account. They didn't like that I suggested using a Fire tablet with Fire Toolbox instead so you can install whatever Play store apps you want and turn that into the same thing as this essentially.

Getting that ref $ is more important that the user safety of SDers apparently, or giving you control over the devices that we pay money to own. Capitalism go brrrrrrr

The photos require subscription, the recipe feature and meals, rewards and the magic scan feature as well. The magic scan was what initially sold me. You can upload a doc of a full to-do list or calendar date list and it auto populates it into the calendar on the set days. My little one for his preschool we got a paper with the full year calendar in just a list date line items, so would have been ideal. But realized its behind the paywall unfortunately.

I have several of these digital frames from 10 inch to 32 inch versions. All most all of them are hackable and run android 4.4 through android 10. Best deals are buying them from amazon resale when they have additional coupons. The best ones I have found are from company called 'Changing Touch' as it has a battery and runs android 14 with google playstore.

There are some good open-source/self-hosted family dashboards like this online, if you want to avoid sending your data to some rando or paying subscriptions.

Ex: https://github.com/PicoPixl/family-dashboard
i read the readme and cant figure out. is this type of dashboard for web browser use only? it's not providing any sort of touch screen interface right?

And the 21.5-in version turn into like a display of photos from museums, etc. Or photos from current event news?

That one is meant for self-hosting. So you run it on a server and then point whatever device you want at it. So an example would be to have a family dashboard in your kitchen. You would buy one of those portable USB-C/HDMI monitors, hook a Raspberry Pi to it, and then access it via a browser and put it in full-screen mode. It does support touch, so long as you buy a portable monitor that supports that.

If you don't want to run a dedicated server, you could probably just run it as localhost on that particular device, though I'm not sure what the experience would be like for some of the connected features like shared calendar via Nextcloud, music via Navidrome, shared shopping list, etc.

Ugh.. I got the Skylight one on-sale at Costco. This one is much cheaper.
I wouldn't worry too much. I got one from Costco too and the obvious advantage here is if it craps out it's easily returnable. Tough nuggets for those who go with the cheaper route and assumed risk in the same event.

we will like you if you can show us how to turn the fire tablet to a slideshow without the screen timing out.
I don't like anything that requires a separate app to work either. But I do have a fire tablet lying around

looks like this code works on the 15" version as well. Intriguing option, but from what I can see, there are other options which are similar priced but has more features. Some i looked at: Micpop, Apolosign, Cozyla, DragonTouch.
Crazy how many of these there are out there.
It looks like a lot of those are more expensive?

Which 32" do you have? I just want a digital frame that cycles through pictures a d maybe videos, but would like a large on for grandma.

What do you recommend for an 80 year old independent senior that lives alone to use? I want something that family members can remotely view to see what her medical appoints are and set reminders for them.

I'll add my support with those suggesting to avoid these kinds of devices. I get that it is convenient, but I'd be really careful about anything that could get access to your Google account or similar. The self-hosted options are more work and likely a bit pricier, but I'd say that is worth it in this case.

I am someone who is not shy about using random Chinese IoT when it makes sense - like for water leak detectors and stuff. But those things I can lock down on a separate IoT network in my house and require zero access to anything else important to me.

The skylight is good for this. Always on screen can show appointments day by day for the person, family can view and change appointments remotely via google calendar (or other linked calendars).
