For the 256GB model that's probably a good idea. But this is the best I've seen for the 512GB model. All the 512GB model refurbished on ebay are like $500+

I don't have first hand experience so take this for what it's worth but supposedly all non-carrier locked pixels can unlock bootloader. From my limited research you enable dev options, in dev options enable bootloader unlocking and USB debugging. Then some adb commands. Here it is for pixel 10, not sure if same for fold:

Hopefully someone else can chime in with more definitive first hand experience.

As far as I can tell spec wise, they are identical except for the storage, correct? E.g. no additional ram or hardware features across 256 and 512?

it has been a while since i flash my phone, but if i recall correctly, once you unlock the bootloader, a lot of app simply won't work anymore, netflex was one of those, and pretty much all the bank software.
