Firstly, most of what I am about to say is subjective, as different gamers will have different preferences.

I am a lifelong TMNT fan. Unlike most current adult fans, I never stopped liking turtles. I have a huge collection of vintage stuff, most of which I collected during the dark years of '98-2002, and certainly before 2012, when it suddenly became cool again to like the turtles. I bought the original arcade game back in '98, and I still have it (and it still works!). Anyway, all of this is to say that I'm a big TMNT fan and I've been a gamer for basically my entire life.

Shredder's Revenge is a solid side-scrolling beat 'em up, in the style of Streets of Rage and other games of that genre. The moves available are definitely more varied than what we had in the old SNES and arcade days, though I found that you can still button mash your way through the game. Still, it's the same formula, which gets old pretty fast. It's possible to beat the game in just a few hours, and once I did, I never had any desire to go back to it. In that sense, I am glad I was able to play it on Gamepass (as opposed to having bought it). I know some people also love the soundtrack, but I did not care for most of the tracks (I found some annoying) and felt they didn't really compare to games like River City Girls.

I think the other thing that sort of bothered me was how many random characters were thrown into the game at every turn. It's clear that the developers knew that they could stoke the flames of nostalgia by just tossing as many familiar characters in as they could, even if there was no rhyme or reason to who they were or where they fit in the context of the "story." Some of them were cool to see, but it feels like someone dumped out a box of their old toys and resolved to cram as many of them into the game as possible. Maybe that works for some players, but for my brother and me it felt silly. The cynic in me thinks that they were working with NECA, given how many of these same characters have been released as deluxe $30-$50 "toys" over the last few years.

Anyway, tldr: it's a simple, fun game, but it's not revolutionary, for me it's not the definitive TMNT game, and in the end it's just another of many side scrolling beat 'em ups.

How is it overhyped? Finding it hard to believe

It's been $14.99 digitally the last 3 times it's been on sale on the eShop. In July, August, and October.

This is the base game. The dimension shock DLC costs $8.

There are three versions of this game:

Classic Edition, Radical Edition, Anniversary Edition, and Ultimate/Collector's Edition.

This is a good deal for the base game

I regret not buying this back when it was $10 - $15 at Walmart last year. I'm curious why it's gone up in price.

I don't have my finger on the pulse of this very well anymore. Did anyone besides a limited print company publish the Ultimate Edition physically, and has the publisher said there will be no further DLC?

That publisher seems to be taking nods from Konami's beat-m-up licensing, as they have a new 2D X-Men game that they released recently.

What's your take on the original NES game before the first arcade game?

At this point, this game should be in the $15-20 range for it to be considered a deal.

Another perspective from a lifelong TMNT fan (nerd). This game hits all the buttons (literally). For what other purpose other than nostalgia? Let's be honest, the original TMNT arcade style games weren't exactly high brow. Just run around and button mash. In that regard, this game delivers, with some extra moves, character references, and funny environments and situations for the Foot Clan to show up in. That said, this isn't that good of a price considering it's been around for awhile and as I recall for much lower.

As an 8 year old, it was incredibly disappointing (but we still played the crap out of it until one of our friends borrowed it and never gave it back). I came to appreciate it more as a teenager, though the Game Genie didn't hurt!
