Decent deal for this combo which is the combo I want. It's slightly cheaper though to buy it directly from Apples Edu store, they don't verify anything to order from there and it saves a small bit of money vs the regular store.

The chip is different but in general, the speed at which thunderbolt ports work is different. For majority of use cases, unless you need all the cores working for sustained periods (such as compiling code, video editing etc), you don't need the Pro version of the Macbook Pro. The pro version also has more cores.

Literally anything that relies on multi-core or GPU performance. Also anyone that needs Thunderbolt 5. It's a MBP because it has the better screen and better I/O of the MBP line.

Exactly, if the Pro chip isn't needed, but all the other upgrades of the MBP are desired, then this is the model. The straight M5 version also has slightly longer battery life too given that battery sizes are identical in M5 and M5 Pro variants of the MBP.

Bingo. Scroll to bottom of Apple website, click "Shop for College", enjoy the savings. You can also order for in-store pickup - they won't ask for a student ID when you pick it up, as long as you bought it online first. If I'm too inpatient to wait for Apple products to go on sale on Amazon, always use the .EDU discount from Apple at launch at least (w/ the Apple Card of course haha).

Obviously you get a 20% multicore bump and more GPU.

But you can't name any pro workflow that currently is made possible by thunderbolt 5 or more GPU right?

This is the 3rd generation in a row that Apple has sold a 14" MBP with the non-Pro CPU. The M3 generation introduced this model as a replacement for the outgoing 13.3" MBP which had been sold since the Intel days.

Especially since the M4 generation introduced multi monitor support in non-Pro CPUs, this has been a great deal if you want the 120hz screen and the other benefits of the MBP without the absolute fastest CPU. And it's less power hungry, too!

Always a bit surprised people talk about performance for MacBooks. I do FE, server and AI coding for my career and this machine better than what most jobs offer lol people that NEED performance are not considering a laptop imo. That's what desktops are for. Mac does a good job at being optimized its OS compared to windows laptops. 16 gb of ram on a windows machine and 16 gb of ram on a Mac is worlds apart.

Honestly a MacBook Air will get the job done for 90 to 95 percent of laptop users. 5 percent could get by with a sub 2k MBP.

I agree with you the M chips are pretty efficient, My macbook air m2 air isn't that much slower than my PC 4060 Ryzen 7 5800x / 64GB ram. I think my pc only beats it a couple minutes on rendering because of the limited 16GB ram.

At this point I think most people would be happier getting the M4 Chip with more ram and hard bigger SSD instead. The only caveat is if you're on the road for a long time and need the extra battery life
