There you've just provided the best example of "confirmation bias" on this whole thread.People who come onto this site to ask for buying advice don't even know what measurements are.People who are measurement Kool Aid drinkers don't ask strangers for such advice, they either choose based on their own canned certitude about what they THINK measurements "prove" about some speakers they're interested in, or they go to that measurement-cultist echo chamber website, Audio Science Review forum, and ask their fellow cultists.
I definitely disagree, people asking completely understand measurements!
You have a galaxy size rabbit hole example over on AVS!

You didn't understand my point(again), they don't ask, they tell based on them.

I'll give you an example.
Tell us again how you know how good or bad these REL subs perform?

I have not (1), but (2) of these 14"s. Wanted to really feel the movie bass effects and they will do just that. Albeit I have the settings only set at 5/11 at the moment. Purchased at the same price and have been happy with these purchases.

How do I know the REL subs are a craptastic price to performance option that should be avoided by the vast majority of consumers? From anecdotal and direct experience. NOT from looking at measurements.

Seems you TRULY understand the benefits of full range/reference speakers, that doesn't change for music or HT!
Of course it does---the end user's actual USAGE trumps all the nerd/OCD/academic details on earth. Unless one is a pathological micro-listener who LISTENS to movies instead of WATCHING them like a normal human being.

HT = your EYES are the dominant sensory input, followed by the ears as a distant second.
Critical music listening = all EARS!

All this audiophool pedantry, pearl-clutching and nitpicking is irrelevant to the vast majority of HT users who simply (gasp!) WATCH movies instead of obsessively micro-listening to them.

If you can't honestly distinguish between those two absolutely distinct modalities, there's nothing more that can be done.

Ok so which model REL did you use for "direct experience" comparison vs which brand/model sub?

LOL that explains A LOT!

ALL the humans I know watch AND listen to movies!!!!
Try WATCHING a movie with those well chosen speakers & decent sub off(except center)!

They make movie soundtracks for a reason!!!

Ponders the question, why are you debating speakers, subs, crossovers if it's all a distance second!!?

Just get a fancy Atmos soundbar like everyone else that believes that pitch and says it's a "fantastic price to performance option"!!!

REL is the only sub maker I know of (correct me if there are others I don't know of) which specifically tells people to run speakers full range with them for the sake of "better integration." I know someone who stupidly did that and ended up blowing their not-cheap towers (Polk Lsi-M) as a result during high volume listening. (And before you ask, yes he was using an Anthem receiver not something entry-level.)

As I have already said in my previous post, no XO is a brick wall, only a slope. And there is no such thing as a "correct" XO point (as long as you don't choose one too low for the speaker's bass limits causing damage to it next time there's some huge explosion or rumble during some dumb action flick), you pick whatever sounds best to YOUR ears with whatever source you're using at any given moment. Yes, it's SUBJECTIVE, just like most things in life.

It's not necessary to turn this silly hobby into some OCD-nerd wang-measuring contest. 🙄
Rel recommends running full range because most of their subs are designed to share the signal coming directly to the speaker via their high level connection, which can also be accomplished on any sub that has a high/speaker level connection. That overrides any crossover setting in an AVR/processor/amplifier and requires that the crossover be set on the sub itself. That crossover point is going to vary depending on the speaker in question, what that speaker is capable of frequency-wise, and what the room is doing to the output. That means there is absolutely a correct crossover point between any speaker/sub combination where the speaker will begin to roll off and the subwoofer should begin to take over based on those factors and individual preference. Do you need a measurement to figure it out? It isn't mandatory but It helps, especially to see what factor the room is playing, but you can also do it by ear. I've done it strictly by ear plenty of times and you can absolutely tell when you hit it - not by looking at the crossover dial to see the number but the sub and speaker literally integrate if done correctly; you can't tell where one stops and the other starts if you get it right. At that point you can run the sub hot if you want more bass or just tailor it to your individual preference. And as I said, it's not just a Rel thing, but a high/speaker level thing. Rel just does their high level connection very well so of course they are going to promote their own tech.

But it sounds like you are talking more about the LFE channel in home theater which is a totally different beast and yet the same rules apply. Correct crossover as set in an AVR/processor is again going to depend on speaker capability/room interaction/user preference but the idea that you just arbitraily set it somewhere and send everything below that point to the sub(s) leaves a lot to be desired. Does it work? Well, you'll get sound out of the system. But will it sound even remotely as good as it could? Most likely not, especially if you aren't running the same speaker on all 5/7/9/whatever channels.

And whoever blows out speakers because they used them beyond their capabilities has only themselves to blame. Whatever bone you have to pick with Rel is your business; they seem to be doing just fine without your business so whatever. But not everybody's audio experience is the same as yours - some people really enjoy digging in and in my experience I've been rewarded by taking the time to research, learn, and experiment. If you just want to plug in, set it, and forget it then cool...you do you. But don't crap on people who are looking for something more.

Couldn't agree with you more - as long as you hit a certain minimum threshold, I'm taking high quality audio over high quality video 100% of the time. It really makes that much difference.

But hey...most people don't know what they don't know.

Dude, that is the same audiophool elitist argument a dime dozen: "either you go all in with us on this OCD-audio paradigm, or just get a soundbar."

I was hoping you were capable of more original thinking. I appear to be sadly mistaken.

HT1510 and T9/X.

Neither one was terrible, but similar or better performance can be easily had for 50% or less of their stupid pricing which clearly follow the Veblen Goods "outrageously inflate to impress the gullible simpletons" technique.

The only thing REL subs really have over internet-direct sub specialist companies like Hsu, RSL, etc is form factor prettiness.

You can easily get excellent "integration" of speakers and sub(s) by ear, I agree, and you can do so without jumping through a bunch of unnecessary academic hoops.

It doesn't take any special voodoo to make the sub unlocalizable and "disappear"---just patience and due diligence thorough experimentation with various settings and room positionings.

lol actually your the only one claiming "all in" doesn't matter.
It is not much better than some $300 speakers using this "decent" sub on some entry level AVR!!!

Apparently only your opinion counts because if we don't agree, what names are we again!?

We hear this same argument from soundbar fans ALL THE TIME!

All you're doing is telling us you're clueless about all this without telling us you're clueless about it!

It looks like from the Klipsch the nines user manual, a subwoofer can get plugged straight into the nines? Does the cord come with the subwoofer to do this?

Also, should I consider using a receiver or other equipment instead of plugging straight into the nines? Why or why not?
