Definitely stay away from REL. They give only a 3 year warranty because their subs are low quality and they know they dont last. One of mine developed a hum even when there is no signal. Of course I was out of warranty (just thought they would be 5 years, my mistake) but contacted to see if they can give me any help. I was hoping for a replacement amp for around cost but tgey wanted $400 plus shipping. Considering I got free shipping on the original purchase it would have cost as much for the replacement amp as the new sub cost me.

They had zero desire to help me. They give a shorter warranty so they dont have to cover the problems they create by cutting corners and they turn that into a profit maker by trying to overcharge for replacement parts. I will never buy REL again and would definitely not recommend them.

You're in for a treat. 2 of these for $1400 is a bargain - probably the best bass per dollar on the market.
I've been enjoying mine for over a year now.

How can you rest something you've never had to begin with?

You've been blowing smoke-rings out of your backside from start to finish. 🤦 ♂️

LOL!!!

BTW all those soundbar owners that you have no problem with say you're blowing smoke up everybody's behind also!

For the price of this sub they get movie theater Atmos sound!
Your entry level setup is only 5% better(if that imo) with no need for a pricy Atmos AVR, big speakers(especially this subwoofer), worry of placement, wires, calibration, etc!!!

Sure seems like a lot of NORMAL people are going that route!
Yes, lots of people who aren't stupidly gullible are buying $400 AVRs (ex. Denon X1700) with a $400-500 sub, about $1500-2000 in speakers, and are happy as pie.

But keep telling yourself your boutique gear (e.g. REL pseudo-subs) that you naively let yourself get gypped for is light years superior, lol

lol that's exactly what they say about you!

The funniest part, they probably have a valid point.

Your entry level setup is pretty on par with those soundbars, without the higher cost and hassle!!!
Keep telling yourself it's movie theater setup!!! lMAO!!!

I just bought a REL Classic 98 for my stereo. What's wrong with REL subs? Took a little bit of tweaking to get the crossover and gain set, but sounds great to me.

LOL that shows just how hearing impaired you are---movie theaters have crap sound! Even some stupid boutique soundbars can do a better job than the average multiplex. It doesn't take much to get much better movie audio than those. You really don't have a clue about anything, do you? (facepalm)

Well, that depends---what sub(s) did you have BEFORE? Frame of reference is everything.

No never had one before. Started listening to my albums again a few months ago. Thought a sub would give my Yamaha NS-1000 speakers a little more punch since they only go down to 45hz. I bought the REL Classic 98 since it wasn't a shiny black box.

Nothing wrong with rel subs. They're known for their bass tightness. However, to most people, bass output is way more important than bass tightness. The klipsch rp-1400sw at 699 is prob the best bang for the buck out there in terms of pure output, while brands like rel gives you the least bang for the buck in terms of output. Again, nothing wrong with rel subs, they just seem overpriced for what they offer.

I guess it all depends on why you want a sub. If watching movies I guess you want the pictures to shake off the wall. For music you should want a natural tight bass, not sound like a cheap car stereo.

Ok, then it would make perfect sense that you'd be thrilled with that $1500 sub which REL spec says has a 6db roll off of 27Hz, which means an F3 (more standard 3db roll-off) of around 32Hz, just barely lower than a massive and costly boutique tower speaker with an F3 of around 35Hz but requires a pricey robust external amp to hit that with any authority.

At the time you bought it, you probably didn't know that RSL makes a similar sized sub the Speedwoofer 10S which has an ANECHOIC 3db roll off of 22Hz. And costs just $500 shipped to your door.

Here is a detailed review of it that includes independent measurements from a well respected, non-payola-slave audio website: https://www.audioholics.com/subwo.../#toc-h2-3

If you had previously owned a sub of similar caliber as that RSL, I doubt you would be so impressed by the Classic 98.

There is ONE area where the C-98 does win: the wood-color cabinet. RSL subs only come in black or white. Most of these internet-direct subs don't even offer white. But there are plenty of small sealed subs like the Rythmik L12 that would easily outperform that REL for much less money.

In any case, welcome to the world of subs. I've always found that a well-chosen $500 sub with a $1000 pair of bookshelf speakers will easily trounce a $3K pair of towers any day for movies, and be equal or better with music. Boutique salespeople and audiophools who comically overspent on the wrong things and don't want to experience buyer's remorse, will of course disagree vehemently.
