Community Reviews

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is a Windows handheld that appeals most for portable PC gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere titles, with an Xbox controller style grip and a 7 inch 1080p 120 hertz screen. The community also notes that Steam can run on it, and Game Pass games can be played offline after an online launch or with offline permissions enabled. The main drawback is game support, since it does not play all Xbox games and several big releases are not available unless they are on PC or Game Pass. Performance is also described as modest for the price, making it a better fit for lighter use than for chasing the biggest games.

Common Questions (4)

  • No. It plays Xbox Play Anywhere titles and other games that also have a PC/Windows version, but not all current-gen Xbox games or Xbox exclusives that never released on PC. Game Pass can cover some supported titles, and cloud streaming can work for certain games.

  • The Z2 A model is positioned closer to Steam Deck-level performance than to a Z1 Extreme, and it is described as weaker than the Z1 Extreme. The higher-end Ally X is viewed as the stronger option, with performance above the Steam Deck and a much bigger gap than between the two Ally models.

  • Yes, but only under specific conditions: the game must have been launched online within the last 14 days, or you can enable Offline Permissions in settings on one device per account. That makes offline play possible without owning a full copy, though the Xbox designation still matters.

  • It is also listed at Sam's Club for $499.99, and Walmart and Best Buy are mentioned at $499 as well. Amazon's delivery window is later, running roughly December 22 to January 5.

Something tells me that, given this is discounted $100 less than 6 months since release, this didn't "take the world by storm" like Microsoft thought it would. Doesn't help it doesn't play Xbox games.

It's a rebranded 6800U. Even worse than Z1 extreme. Better off with a 1st gen Ally

Less than 2 months. Came out mid October. This one just has very mediocre/bad performance compared to everything else in the market. It's on about the same performance as the steam deck. The main one (the rog Xbox ally x / the black one) sold pretty well even though it's overpriced. Performance difference between the two is very big.

Only games that were also released for PC/Windows, yes. That's not all Xbox games for the current generation.

I dont think that this is geared at the "performance crowd". The Steam Deck performance is fine for many people. However isnt going to take on the biggest games. The problem is that no one knows which games which device can play.

Of course not. And anyone buying a PC should know that. Microsoft has branded its PC gaming as XBox for years.

A non-techie customer may not be aware of this. Imagine a mom buying this "Xbox" for their kid for Christmas to play an Xbox-exclusive title that wasn't also released on PC.

Yes, Microsoft has been working on making exclusives less of a thing, but it's not there yet and plenty of games will say "Made for Xbox" on the shelf that are in a "not this one" scenario.

Valid point. But chances are the kid would be interested in a newer game. What Xbox exclusive hasn't been released on the PC in the past few years?

Z2 A = rebranded Steam Deck chip, not a 6800U.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis...hitectures)

Z2 A = 4-core Zen 2, 8 CUs RDNA2
6800U = 8-core Zen 3+, 12 CUs RDNA2

Is the upgraded ROG Xbox one any good specs wise?
TBH this appeals to me because I can take my Xbox library on the go and have a portable pc and access to all the other pc games. Plus the Xbox controller handles will make it an easy switch.
Open to alternatives, especially at this price point.

this plays PC games, so only the XBOX library that also has PC PLAY ANYWHERE titles will continue your saves
