The only time I've seen Amazon sell anything close to expiration, it was sold by Amazon Warehouse/Resale, was heavily discounted and the expiration date was prominently disclosed so that people knew what they were buying.
Everyone else isn't too stupid to check expiration dates or know when a soda is flat. If it were as common as some people claim, Amazon wouldn't be able to sell it because no one would buy it. Clearly, if expired products are sold those are the exception and not the rule, unless you're buying from an unscrupulous third-party vendor.

I think it has to do with their inventory systems or possibly how they mix third party stuff... but they can get away with this/have leeway in ways that a local grocery cannot.
