It's crazy that the iPhone 17 starts with 256gb finally, and the MacBook still only starts with that amount. Maybe they will start with 512gb on the next model.
Why is that crazy? Objectively, people use their phone for much more than they do laptops these days. They take more photos/videos on their phone than they do on say a dslr/mirrorless and transfer them on a laptop. Nearly all office applications store their files in the cloud. And NAS/Cloud services are more popular these days than before which are, again objectively, better places to store files so the only need for local storage is applications, OS, and temp files for the most part.

Anyone buying a base model machine knows what they're getting. If you need more, get the model with more. Every time these threads pop up it's the same type of people complaining about storage/RAM. You're not the target audience for this machine, just like i'm not the target audience for a pink volkswagen beetle, difference is i'm not over there complaining about it.

Fantastic price for an excellent laptop. The M1 version of this (same specs) helped me land multiple software engineer positions over the past years. This one has a better camera too.

Storage isn't a big concern, as a nvme ssd + enclosure gives you a lot more for quite cheap. Apple OS does take up ~50% of the space, however. Not thrilled about that, but it is what it is.

RAM is just a number for most people, I run IntelliJ / PyCharm all the time without issues. 16 GB unlikely to be an issue for most people.

I switched from Windows to Mac, and I am impressed with the configuration and speed. It's smooth and supports dual monitors. It will replace my Windows laptop in a couple of months.

So tempted to pick up a 16 GB memory, 512 GB SSD one to replace my 8 GB, 256 GB SSD M1 I got in 2020. But it's such a workhorse and seems fine now. I think I'll wait a little longer for the prices to go down more next year, which they inevitably will next cycle

I assume you only run intelligent nothing else. If I add intellij and couple of tabs any browser, i am already at 15gb. Open some other app and I'm already swapping. I'm mostly on vscode because I need the ram as well. It becomes unresponsive when it's swapping. I have a 32gb for work, and with all the tabs and everything else, it taps out with my 24gb + systems + my job spying apps

If this is actually on a Mac, something is wrong, wouldn't surprise me if it's the job spying apps. I'm using this 16gb model, no problems running 6 separate repos with vscode + iterm2, multiple different dev servers, o365 garbage, dozens of Firefox tabs active, plus multiple instances of the other software I develop, all with aerospace tiling window manager driving ~18 workspaces. I've 10x more stuff going on at any one time than anyone else in my company, and this thing can still run circles around the more expensive Windows machines with 2-3x the RAM.
Disk space was a headache long before I ever felt a performance wall from CPU or RAM, I'm glad package managers like pnpm and uv are here to save the day. Containers are a painful thing currently, so if you need to run a bunch of docker stuff then spring for more, though Apple released their own version of containers which is very efficient, obviously not viable yet but maybe one day.

IDK, I'm hitting thermals before I hit genuine slow down from RAM. Any performance issues I've had are the same issues I've seen on 32gb MBP, like when MacOS indexing misbehaves around build directories.
