I have a MacBook Pro 13 with M1, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. I mostly use it for developing but feel that I need an upgrade. Do you think this one with M5, 16GB RAM, or M1 Max with 32GB is a better option?

For those who are good with it, check out Best Buy Open Box - Excellent, too. I ordered one that actually came completely sealed seemingly brand new for $1249 a few weeks back.

buy this one. Longer support. M1 will be cut off now too long in the future.

If your work is RAM intensive (hosting VMs, dabbling in on-device LLMs) or graphics related (video editing on a professional level) then M1 Max option will likely better fit your workflow. Else the M5 machine will be better in most ways.

You probably don't need an upgrade, but…
I have the same laptop as you. The processor is an M1 Pro, which has more cores than this M5 non-Pro.

My plan is to upgrade to the M5 Pro with 24 GB. The M5 Pro has more cores plus it has Thunderbolt 5 for 80 Gbs storage. Lots of room for the future with such a machine.
