Bought this when it was $30 from Walmart. Actually works very well.

Important to note that it's app only. There are no controls on the device other than a power button.

You do not need to pay subscription to use it unless you want wifi capability. It is free to use via the app/Bluetooth.

Overall it's pretty good but during a cook the app can struggle to refresh if you leave and come back to it so what I do is close out the app entirely and reopen and it has consistently connected after that. Not too bad of an issue but worth noting

these are great, easiest example is for meat- you're not boiling them, you're holding them at specific temps so that the proteins behave certain ways. e.g. 144°F chicken breast is more or less rare and safe to eat because it's been pasteurized, but the meat won't get stringy or tough because that's a side affect of being exposed to high heat.

great stuff- lots of kenji articles on serious eats about it. buying a couple of these to hand out as gifts, lol- annoying to have to use app to set it, but it's 20$ a pop which is less than aldi's cheapo SVs when they have them randomly.

I bought this recently, and just to clarify: a subscription is not required to use the sous vide. The app does promote a subscription, but one can navigate past it and use every function of the device without paying anything. It's a fully usable, no-cost experience as long as the app remains available.

Among the seasonings is a hefty dose of micro plastics and offgassing flavor. Buy if you want to reduce your testosterone levels.

Eh meat is most commonly sold even to butchers packed in plastic before they do final trim. Let him/her/gender pronoun be oblivious to what they can't see.

Micro plastics are released more in certain conditions (cold, abrasive, acidic, etc) than they are in other (hot, away from the sun).

NYC didn't go back to metal garbage cans even though they are more environmentally friendly. Rats still chew through the new ones

It means that eventually they will stop supporting the device in their app, and it will become a paperweight. This is not theoretical, they already removed support for some of their earlier models - but at least those have physical controls, you can use them without the app just fine.
So don't update it if they say they are ending support

Last time I went grocery shopping the aisles were full of things in plastic. I'm not sure the sous vide is going to be the culprit here. I'm not even sure where to get meat that isn't already covered with or inside plastic. Do you have a butcher that uses paper?
Heating plastic is the issue. It rapidly degrades and releases all sorts of harmful chemicals.

1. How do you avoid micro plastics, which are a far bigger concern for children and teens? I assume people use silicone bags. But are those safe?

2. How do you seal the bags? Another device for that?

This is the company that charges you a monthly service fee to turn your oven on/off via app. 🤦🏽 ♂️

I suggest skipping them to avoid crappy companies.

most of us are using plastic bags, fancy folks use silicone laugh out loud

you can either use vacuum bags with a vacuum sealer or ziploc-style bags and just do the water displacement method to get most of the air out.

the only time I sous vide a steak it tasted weird. I sous vide it med rare then seared. I wonder if it has to do with the fat not rendering or the amount of time in the bath. someone want to show me how to sous vide a steak and have it come out better than reverse sear

The "no cost experience" depends on the app continuing to exist. The device doesn't function without the app, so if Anova removes the app/stops supporting it, the device would be a brick.
Or they change it to make it work only with payment Frown

for ribeyes and fattier cuts, people often recommend getting to medium or close to medium for better fat rendering before searing.

is there an opensource replacement to their app?
not having physical control stinks when there's a good chance of planned obsolescence/waste.
This is future e-waste and why it's $20. You should literally buy any other cheap sous vide unit from Amazon that has physical controls.

Kinda tempting but I own a Joule and it's more powerful, has a better app, and no subscription.
