Bought this when it was $30 from Walmart. Actually works very well.

Important to note that it's app only. There are no controls on the device other than a power button.

You do not need to pay subscription to use it unless you want wifi capability. It is free to use via the app/Bluetooth.

Overall it's pretty good but during a cook the app can struggle to refresh if you leave and come back to it so what I do is close out the app entirely and reopen and it has consistently connected after that. Not too bad of an issue but worth noting

these are great, easiest example is for meat- you're not boiling them, you're holding them at specific temps so that the proteins behave certain ways. e.g. 144°F chicken breast is more or less rare and safe to eat because it's been pasteurized, but the meat won't get stringy or tough because that's a side affect of being exposed to high heat.

great stuff- lots of kenji articles on serious eats about it. buying a couple of these to hand out as gifts, lol- annoying to have to use app to set it, but it's 20$ a pop which is less than aldi's cheapo SVs when they have them randomly.

I bought this recently, and just to clarify: a subscription is not required to use the sous vide. The app does promote a subscription, but one can navigate past it and use every function of the device without paying anything. It's a fully usable, no-cost experience as long as the app remains available.

Oh don't I know it! I ran a couple sirloins through there at 140.... Quick sear in a cast iron pan.... Not even a hint of gray, she was hot pink from edge to edge!

I have like 3 units. Gen 1 (colorish touch screen 1000w) Gen 2 digital numeric display). The gen 1 is a tank. You really need a big container to fully utilize it. Gen 2 was better, but still kinda large. Dedicated cook chambers for these are the way.

I'm hoping this one will be better. I ordered it, but the planned destruction of usability without a physical interface annoys me.
It will join the world of net connected zero software support.

I'm hoping that someone just makes a raspberry pi emulator so that Bluetooth and apks can be loaded. Between the companies going under and android having software phases out due to "incompatibility"

I only bought this one for travel.

To further elaborate on one of the replys, if you use a cut of meat like chuck roast that takes long and slow to become tender you can toss it in the Ziploc or vaccum sealed bag and put it on super low for half a day then sear it and you have a super tender and relatively cheap steack

For those of you who have this, I read that it remembers the previous set temp. If I only want to use this for steaks and leave it at 134 degrees, could I theoretically just use the power on and off button and a kitchen thermometer (which I already have) and not have to use the app? Thinking of gifting to a young adult who only cooks steaks.

Last time I went grocery shopping the aisles were full of things in plastic. I'm not sure the sous vide is going to be the culprit here. I'm not even sure where to get meat that isn't already covered with or inside plastic. Do you have a butcher that uses paper?
