This is from the Nintendo shop's listing. It appears that basic nso is needed to purchase but expansion is required for games. I have family+expansion so I didn't even pay attention. But being an online only item it's cheaper cuz you can't load games on this it has no hardware in it and no one would pay $300 if this was loaded

When do you expect the online shop to close down? It seems it should be available for quite some time. The individual games being available are a different story though, but I doubt they take up enough room on the servers to be an issue any time soon. I have honestly been in the market for a Virtual Boy in the recent past, but wasn't willing to pay the recent prices considering the added cost of the games.
Edit: I agree it is a bit of a novelty item though.
