Hi! I own one, lots of collecting old tech at garage sales and auctions. Guts of steel usually- all the coasters etc- the Virtual Boy tends to give me either nausea or headaches. Don't really recommend but was cool tech for its day

novelty item.....what happens when online shop closes down in the future...would of made sense it this was a stand alone item pre loaded with games rather than a online accessory
Can be said about literally any piece of tech that is reliant on digital-only content. Phones, computers, consoles that do not accept physical media. What happens when anything you buy breaks? When you inevitably die? Why buy anything? Now we have come full circle and reached enlightenment.

I would buy that for $100. I would not buy it as it is today, which is a paperweight

That's what it should have been. A stand alone product like the NES and SNES classic. But nowadays every single company. Sadly even Nintendo. Wants to push everyone to a subscription model. They could have even charged $130 to have a stand alone version and people would have bought it. How much could it be for a couple of crappy red and black LCD screens and a really cheap chip to emulate the VB?? Instead they want us to pay $100 for a plastic empty shell AND THEN pay a subscription for the games?! Not only the basic NSO but the much more expensive expansion pack?! I miss last place scrappy Nintendo. The Nintendo that was willing to fight to get customers. Not the one that's willing to charge its fans up the wazoo. IMO this is more egregious than the cost of the Switch 2 which I have and love.

There is a cardboard version up for preorder for $25. That is still kind of a silly price as well but probably easier to store away when you get bored with the novelty of the Virtual Boy 5 minutes in. I can't give Nintendo money any more. They are just too anti consumer. $99 for a piece of plastic to play poor quality 3D games that still requires you to pay another yearly fee to access them is about as Nintendo as you can get.

Have my original from the 90's. It was neat for a while, but as others have said, eye strain and headaches are part of my memories of pulling up to the table to sit and shove my face in it. A few decent games, but nothing that's worth the money and effort this day in age.

Now you understand why they call it the SWITCH...because they can SWITCH it off whenever they like! This isn't hyperbole, it's literally in their EULA which you agree to when you first turn on the system. You're not buying the console, you're buying a license to use the console -- which can be revoked at any time, for any reason -- bricking not only online play but also bricking local offline usage. It'll become a paperweight, and so will EVERY game ever associated with that Switch. You'll own nothing...and you'll like it!

There's absolutely no need for this device to be reliant on (not digital-only content) server-based content.

They could easily make discs/cartridges with the game on them. Have entirely offline-only play, built-in and entirely allowed from Day 1. No registration, no accounts, no subscriptions, no remote deactivations, no telemetry collection.

And the fact that there are so many people so eager and enthusiastic about spending their money with a company that cares so little about them...it's disheartening.

Since you already bought the system, knowing full well their business model, then it must not bother you all that much.

Ditto. No more offline only unit
You can use it on a hacked switch, assuming you find a way to order it without subscribing to Switch Online. Then you just sideload the Virtual Boy app after it becomes available. The app includes the games.
You can also briefly go online just to install the Virtual Boy app from Nintendo and then play it offline.
