If you aren't going to be using it in a console where the lower heat of the 7100X will matter more, the 2TB SN850X is $135-$139 right now at Walmart (select stores only).

https://slickdeals.net/f/18870490

SN850X: ~7,300 MB/s read / ~6,300–6,600 MB/s write across capacities

SN7100X: ~7,250 MB/s read / ~6,900 MB/s write (1–2 TB models)

Choose SN850X if:
- You value DRAM cache and sustained performance under heavier loads.

- You want a proven high-end Gen4 drive with long track record.

-You're building a desktop gaming/creator rig.

Great all-around strong performer and longtime enthusiast favorite.

Choose SN7100X if:
- You want newer NAND and efficiency (battery-friendly in laptops portable consoles).

- You prefer lower heat and power draws.

- You're buying for gaming/system SSD where the tiny DRAM benefit isn't critical.

- You want slightly better write performance per dollar.

Best bang-for-your-buck modern Gen4 SSD.

Is it necessary to phrase it specifically for ally x?

Marketing aside, this model has especially low power usage compared to other SSDs that makes it better for handhelds.

That's how its phrased on the Sandisk website, which I agree can be misleading but at least they specified that it's also for PC. Hope that helps!

I imagine that heat could be another factor in a performance-focused device with a confined space. A SSD that heats up more could end up throttling down. Also, a SSD that heats up more could contribute to other components throttling as well.

SN5000 WD 2TB is in and out of stock for $124 at Walmart. I think that would be a better value. It's slower, but I don't think you can tell the difference

The max read speed for that drive is 5500MB/s, which will be barely noticeable when compared to the 7000+MB/s of the others on a PC (fractions of a second).

May be a different story for PS5 though. While it SHOULD be fine since that's the minimum speed required, I've seen quite a few forums where users report compatibility issues when installing it in a PS5. Seems the normal "real-world" speeds are closer to 5000MB/s falling short of the minimal requirement and resulting in the PS5 rejecting it as insufficient.

I recall learning that the faster Gen 4 speeds generally don't matter on PS5. Better to just get the cheapest Gen 4 - in my case that was a 2TB Crucial P3 Plus for $120 with heatsink included. Been performing flawlessly on PS5 despite only being around 5000/4200 MB/s.

No perceptible speed difference from the stock SSD in PS5.

If you are just PC gaming, Gen 3 is really all you need. Hardware Unboxed did a nice video comparing speeds. "Best SSD for Gaming 2025: PCIe 5.0 vs 4.0 vs 3.0 vs SATA vs HDD"

Good info. The issues I've read regarding the slower drives were from awhile back, so it's possible firmware was updated to accept "slower" drives.

I bought a 2TB XPG S70 Blade for my PS5 back in 2021 for $99. Was expensive because it was just released, but I would've bought 2 if I had known prices were going to increase as much as they have. That same drive is now $179-199.

I definitely agree that it's not worth the extra price to buy an NVMe over SATA just for gaming, but I've seen most SATA drives priced pretty close to NVMe drives lately (sometimes more). In these instances, if you have the extra M.2 slots available, might as well spend just a bit more.

I ran a 2TB SATA drive in my last PC with a Ryzen3700x and 3070. In my new build, which has a Gen4 NVMe, the difference in load times for most games was less than 2 seconds.

Cyberpunk, for instance, took 7 seconds to load from main menu using the SATA. On the NVMe, it took 5 seconds. No other perceivable difference once loaded.

The only time I noticed a difference was when transferring data back and forth which want get often. For every day use in the PC world, there's really nothing in Windows or current games that require (let alone utilize) the speed of an NVMe.
