Good price, but I'd still be hesitant to purchase PPEs from Amazon.

Incredible deal if they're legit!

3M has a tool to check if they're authentic: https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/safe-guard-us/

These are effectively expired so the price makes sense, that being said i am sure they are fine for dust and things just maybe not the covid ward at peak of the pandemic

I don't think "date first available" means this box of masks, I think that is the MODEL availability was new at that time.. or does amazon actually report inventory in stock/stocked date?

Regardless, I've read that the FIVE year quality date applies mostly to the latex STRAPS and not the N95 membranes.

Someone did testing on these trying to determine if they are legit, he came to the conclusion that they are almost certainly genuine

Having read multiple recent reviews, they all say they are weeks or months away from the expiration date. Whether that has to do with the straps or the fabric or what I couldn't tell you and sounds like you are guessing too. Regardless I wouldn't use a PPE product near or beyond expiration date if it was for life sustaining purposes. For shit around the house sure. Again it makes perfect sense these are discounted because it is NEARLY EXPIRED medical equipment. A deal for some but not a deal for others who need unexpired PPE.

....people were mandating by law for others to wear leftover pieces of tshirt over their faces in a last-ditch attempt to control that utter disaster. I'd have happily taken an "expired" N95 at that time.

Also, most people have no idea just how single-use PPE is meant to be used. The concept of reusing a single-use mask is laughable in any scenario where you're depending on it to protect your life. And you're handling it, then touching other surfaces!

We did a test in a college organic chemistry course where a coupple of people were dosed with a UV reactive dye...and by the end of a normal class, even with what we considered to be "proper" PPE usage, everything was coated. And that was touch-only. It was to teach us just how insidiously contamination can spread. So many procedures in 2020-2022 were "better than nothing"....but sadly, not by much. Theatrical posturing...which only fuels the opposite narrative, sadly.

I remember when these things were hoarded like toilet paper during the '24 port scare.

There are/were indeed poor masks, and cloth masks are very weak and surgical masks are a joke for any aerosolized respiratory virus or pathogen..

That said, I've worn the 3M respirator masks since early 2020 for being in close quarters with other humans, air travel, road tripping through the dome (Red Route 1). And all other work in person that I had to do over the past 4 years - and never had COVID or the Flu or a cold.

So, high quality N95 masks (which are mostly closer to N97-N98) CAN protect and avoid transmission even when exposed. It's not truly about absolute avoidance 100% expectation but reducing any volume of exposure.. so tiny exposure, the body can much better deal with than bolus of exposure or time.. YMMV.

I don't wear these but my wife does (they are smaller for smaller faces to make a better seal) and she's had even more travel than I during the past 5 years (certainly more AIR complex travel) and she to has been any infection free since 2019.
