Do these need a subscription? I already have a smart watch but it seems like to get any real mileage you need an app with pro features that require a monthly fee.

For simple score keeping, Gps and such, no. I don't use anything advanced but I don't think there is a subscription that I have ever been offered.

There is a subscription for more advanced info: green contours, play like distance (basically the distance with slope calculated), and overhead view of the hole layout.I have this watch and it works great without the subscription. I mostly play on courses with little elevation change but I do wish I had the hole layout when I'm playing new courses. Besides that you'll be fine without the subscription.

Thanks - I've been considering getting one instead of my Pixel Watch because when I use the PW with 18Birdies or TheGrint it seems like the GPS kills the battery really fast. I'm also not a fan of the interface on either of those apps as far as the watch is concerned, I figured Garmin has had awhile to figure this out they must have nailed it by now.

As for sub features, I'm nowhere near a good enough golfer to benefit from any advanced stats on how the wind should affect my shot or the slope of the greens, at this point I'm more concerned with not getting lost on courses I'm playing the first time and keeping score and track of distances with my clubs.
