For me $30.45 with S&S, 30.45/6 = 5.075/12oz bag. 5.075/12 = ~42.229/ounce * 16 = ~$6.77/lb. Tempted.

if you're going to get starbucks probably just get preground. these are whole bean, likely old, and roasted to a crisp, so what's the benefit to grinding them fresh?

Pre-ground is the worst thing to buy in bulk. It loses its freshness exponentially faster once exposed to air. The whole bean can better retain the oils and provide an insulating effect, while also limiting the surface area exposed to oxygen. I choose to go with whole bean because you generally get a more stable product that stays fresher longer, and you can grind it as needed for the freshest cup, and usually the best deals on bulk are whole bean. It's the preferred form factor for coffee shops/coffee enthusiasts. I'm no coffee snob, if pre-ground does the job for you, have at it. But there are numerous benefits to whole bean, at the relatively small inconvenience of using a grinder. My coffee maker lets you add whole beans to a chamber connected to a burr grinder so it's a pretty seamless experience.
