A very common use for these are to save you from getting a ticket when cities drop the speed limit from 80 to 40 for a few hundred feet, such as at the bottom of a hill to fatten up revenue.

I don't "speed" often (destroys mpg efficiency) and even then is typically 4-7 over. All of this is the well within the normal flow of traffic. Radar detector helps remind me to mind my speed and protect against the small chance that a cop may decide to penalize even a marginal speed overage.

Not everyone using one of these is the maniac going 20mph faster than everyone else, weaving in and out of traffic, though if a ban on these would prevent those dudes, then by all means bring it on.

Are those things really work?
Would buying a cheaper option at $300, or $40 range would work too? What percentage does these work? Like saving you 9/10 times?

I've had an R3 for a long time, no tickets, and I have it just running Ka. It's quiet and gives a lot of range. I paid around $300 for it many years ago. At the time, they didn't have the one with arrows, which would have been nice, but not $300 extra nice.
Do you often speed? Like does this protects you from going at 75 at 65 limit? Or do you do 90-95 in empty road and it helps to avoid cops?

Radar detectors are illegal in VA. I use Waze all the time, even when driving in other states. And it's free. Just saying, as an alternative to spending money on the detector.
Only problem is that there are cell dead zones in cities and countryside. That leaves you with nothing.

Thanks for that! Once I switched to Advanced mode it's much quieter and still accurate to police presence. It's saved me numerous times, especially when, like the top poster above mentioned, speed limits lower drastically in local areas.
Definitely update. And find the settings best suited for your state (plenty of forums online). Even better if you get the custom firmware.

I have an Uniden R3 and combine that with Waze. Together, I haven't been pulled over in forever. Although, Waze does cover a lot. That doesn't help with cops who just started in a new position or on a stretch of road without many drivers (i.e. late at night). That's where the radar steps in.

Regarding if these work. Yes, Uniden's work and are known as one of the best radar detectors out there. Using this with Waze, I'm at years to 0 pulled over... If you have a smaller budget, you can definitely get an R3 or even an R4 and have great success; just use Waze too. As an FYI - the only type that these don't really work for are Lasers. We always say if you get an Alert for a laser, that just lets you know you are about to be pulled over; lol.

I ordered this deal (R8) because I had a Christmas bonus that I needed to buy something for myself (wife mandated). From the R3 to the R8, I'm looking forward to more control over alerts and the ARROWS!

Are these pretty easy to swap between cars?
If you have the right setup and mounts, yes. Check out blend mount and stealth mount and dongar

Thanks for the reply. Can I assume you also frequently drive the car like 30% higher than speed limit?
Waze or Google Maps, I think its manageable to be around 15% higher than the limit anyway.

I bought the R4 (very similar to the R8 functionally except for the arrows.) Sam's Club has then for $319 and even put them on sale for $299 fairly regularly.

To be frank, I typically only drive 10 over for the most part, but there are those times that I feel like playing and go above that. There are also times when you get into the busy areas where everyone drives more than 10 over so you need to do so just to stay with the crowd. These are the areas I really rely on the detector more as they go thru spots where you'll have a line of cops who pull over the first 4-5 in the group. I've had my R3 go off and I was able to bail out of the group and miss the roadside meeting.
