Tell us more? What is the source of the material used for the transfer? Suggest a better transfer?

Friends (2012 & 2017) Standard Blu-ray
Transfer Quality: A high-quality, film-like 1080p HD transfer created from a 4K scan of the original 35mm film negatives.
Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1 Widescreen. The show was originally shot on film (which is square-ish, 4:3), but the film was open-matted to show more information on the sides to create the 1.78:1 widescreen image for this release.

Color Grading: Generally considered to have a more natural color palette and good film grain structure. Some fans prefer this color timing over the sometimes more aggressively saturated look of the newer 4K HDR release.

Audio: Lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 (which is a step down from the lossless DTS-HD MA on the 4K set).
Content: Contains the original broadcast versions of the episodes, which are shorter than the "extended" episodes found on the original DVD sets.

The Bottom Line on the 2017 Set:

The 2017 release was primarily a new, often more compact, packaging option for the set. If you are comparing it to the 2012 release, they are technically the same transfer.

If your primary goal is the best quality video and sound possible in 2024/2025, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (released in 2024) is the superior technical transfer because it offers:
2160p (4K) Resolution
HDR (Dolby Vision/HDR10)
Lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
However, if you are looking for the original Blu-ray transfer (which some feel is better graded) and don't have a 4K player/TV, the 2017 (or 2012) set is still an excellent HD presentation.

Unfortunately they did a very poor job of the t4k ransfer The colors are off throughout the entire series and oftentimes the brightness looks like it was turned way up washing out the actor's faces. Most notably in I want to say it was season 3 episode 2 the one where no one's ready Rachel is originally wearing a mint green dress but in this abysmal 4K transfer the dress looks powder blue and even Jennifer Aniston herself came on social media to let everyone know Yes the dress originally was mint green so unless you like throwing money away stick to the HD version of the series

You're right about the dress and here's a source.

Really thought about buying this for ~$35 from GRUV but 1) It's on Hulu and 2) I have some PS5 consoles but those are my only Blu Ray players. In a couple years when the next consoles come out I highly doubt they'll have disc drives and I'll have no way to watch my Blu Rays without spending extra to get another and 3) It's super annoying having discs/changing out discs at all in 2025 when everything is available digitally.

I'd rather change discs, than have to be subscribed to several streaming services that constantly jack their prices up just to stream a handful of TV shows and movies. Plus, not everything is readily available to stream or even purchase digitally and sometimes even your digital purchases can get revoked.

We have this BR set. Watched during lunchtime during covid. Have watched it completely again since then (after Matthew Perry passed). I love this show.... even with my intense hatred for Ross. Wife agrees and we fast forward through Ross heavy episodes.

I do wish the BR and/or 4K releases had the bonus footages (bllopers) the original DVD releases included.

I agree I have one of the DVD box sets that has those bloopers as well as the original uncut versions of the episodes

Unfortunately I don't think that is ever going to happen. I prefer the DVD set myself with the originally aired TV episodes, but the video gets to be a little rough when watched on a 70"+ 4K TV now.
