About this title:
  • After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. Why?
  • In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the "play-based childhood" began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood" in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood" has interfered with children's social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies.
  • Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He diagnoses the "collective action problems" that trap us, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

Probably, but I also think withholding screens from children while surrounded by adults addicted to them is part of the problem. It's like having a party fueled by alcohol and drugs, inviting children, then telling them not to touch them.

You'll read this book, then never even think of handing a child a phone until the age of 16.

Great deal if you combine with the ongoing buy one get one 50% off. Works out to $6.37 per book.

Edit: the extra copy would make a great gift to other parents

Interesting hypothesis but likely highly reductive. The impacts of social media and over-busy/disengaged parenting coupled with societal pressures are likely much more impactful. "Coddling of the American Mind" is also a riveting read. The author likely has a point but also not sure their logic is a primary causal factor.
It's really obvious you haven't read the book. I think you'd like it. Wink

It's up to the reader to decide the value of a book's contents, but I will say this - there is a of criticism about the content and conclusions contained within. I would recommend reading / watching some reviews and/or counter content before buying. Also - you can find this book in any goodwill. Even at this price - it is not a "slick" deal.
My local Half Price Books is selling them for $25 used.

If you're saying we should stop using our phones in front of kids, then I agree with you. If you're saying that because we're going to use our phones in front of our kids, then our kids should have them too, then I definitely don't agree with you.

Indeed, modeling good behavior is generally always a good parenting plan. Overall, Haidt is quite un-nuanced in a world full of complexity and nuance. If kids are going to use technology as adults, teaching them how to use it in healthy ways seem better than forbidding it.
Agree with this point. After all, other than the law, there isn't an adult button that you push when a kid turns 18. Often, shielded kids have a hard time with freedom and exposure to the real world.

LMAO! Your local half price is a joke. Even Goodwill's book website has copies for half that cost. And I found a 9 dollar copy on eBay Wink The point is, in store goodwill finds are even cheaper; I've seen this plenty of times.

Speaking of reductive. Also, majority of the book is talking about... That first thing that you just said, social media.

Technology is part of our society. I think it's ineffective to believe kids shouldn't have screens but use them, ourselves, all the time. The tough part is moderating kids' usage of screentime without relying on it for all their brain enrichment. Screen addiction is a real thing that is comparable to other addictions. Also, studies show that teenagers with less screentime suffer less mental health issues. I'm guessing it's the same for adults, but I haven't read any literature that shows it.
