I modded a similar model (A168) because I like the shape and how it feels on my wrist and wanted a higher quality feel. I also wanted a watch with a black case, and mod was the cheapest option that fit my taste. Even then, it did feel a bit silly paying 4x the watch price.

I'd wear it around to see if you like it before modding.

That's part of the allure. A lot of people like myself have an emotional connection to the watch. I had the same 105w all through my military service, it was pretty beat up so I used mods to keep it going (and improve it). It's definitely niche.
