I got the hammer drill from Floor and Decor deal 2 days ago, today I tried to turn a particularly large screw in some wood, could not turn it. Wondering what to do at this point.

of course a buddy's dewalt drill, same size, could easily turn it

seems like the best thing to do is take it back, because I doubt a warranty is going to do anything

Not that its an excuse for lack of power, but that is the wrong application for a hammer drill.
A hammer drill applies force in the direction of the drilling (straight forward). An impact driver applies force in the direction of the rotation, which turns the screw/bolt with more force. Thats the tool you needed.

Did you have it on the right setting? I have the 20v drill and can drive a 6' screw no problem.

Your link literally approves my point as there are none in stock in my state and haven't been and months at floor and decor. 20 volt or otherwise.

Now that Lowe's is dropping the product line, we'll have to buy from Amazon or Walmart which do not seem to price the tools right.

That's what this tool is for. You pre-drill the hole then flip the bit and drive in the screw.

Ordered this Thanksgiving and just used it yesterday at church. Installing aluminum framed cork strips using the 2 screws supplied. Drilled a pilot hole into the metal stud, no issues (used Milwaukee Shockwave bit). Then for the screw, it had difficulty turning the screw into the smallish pilot hole. Brought a DeWalt XR impact just in case, which had no problem. Next one, drilled a slightly bigger pilot hole, then the Skill could screw it in. This was using dial 9, and apparently I left the slide switch on 1, so didn't get to see it in action on 2. It was convenient being able to flip back and forth. But still had to hold up, or a helper hold up the cork strip, in order to flip it. My hands are smaller, require two hands to flip, one to push the button, other to flip. It was a bit sticky in the beginning. But after 6 or 7 strips, it began to flip smoother. The biggest convenience was the magnetic top, holding about 8-10 screws, 3/4 inch. If somehow the flipping could be a one handed operation, it would be great. Since the power is low, I had full confidence I would not over-screw things. It was a simple test. Working on wood studs, I wouldn't even consider this tool. It's best for simpler things, light switches, outlets, toys, hanging pictures, when letting novices borrow a power tool, etc. It's lighter than the DeWalt XR 2amp'er and way lighter than M18 Fuel impact 5 amp battery. For this price, it's a keeper.

I love this line of products. Great lights and great cost for surprising power I do handyman stuff for a living and this line of product is amazing. I use it for 25-50% of my day to day. They pack a suprising punch for the 12v. If you understand using the right tool for the right job, this line is a great supplement, at a great cost. Your probably looking at less than $400 for 10+ tools if you get them on sale @ $35 a tool. I beleive all the 12v are brushless and the weight makes them great for all day use without any fatigue. I wouldnt try to drive huge screws all day but it can sink a handful of 4-6" into softwood or predrilled holes.

Regarding previous sale, this was, initially, $50, plus free tool. The invoice listed this tool around $35, and free tool I opted for jigsaw, invoiced at $15. Later Thanksgiving day, they dropped prices on these again, $40 for both.
