Here's my experience: I purchased this phone last week by adding a new line to my existing T-Mobile account.
I was charged tax on the full price of this phone at Walmart during checkout , which came to about $90.
Within two days, I received the phone, activated it, made a few calls, and paid the remaining balance of $299.
Later, I contacted customer care to cancel the line and inquire about the unlock process. They informed me that the line must remain active on this phone for 40 days. The phone will remain locked if the line is terminated before 40 days.
So, I've decided to keep the line active for 40 days and cancel it afterward. Assuming a service charge of $40 for 40 days for my plan, plus a possible $35 activation fee (to be confirmed on my next bill),
my total cost is $299 for the phone, $90 in tax, and $40 in service charges—$430 without activation fees, or $465 if activation fees apply.
I'm not sure if this is really a deal, but I decided to give it a try.

I am having an old T-Mobile plan so can I purchase this and start using with my existing plan? Even if it is locked to T-Mobile for several months it is fine as the price for my old plan is very low , is there any complication here using my existing T-Mobile plan? Would appreciate if someone can advise here

I went ahead and rolled the dice and ordered one. Current t-mobile customer maxed out at 10 lines. Opened a new account in my wife's name and then planning on paying the device off, canceling the new account and using the phone on one of our existing t-mobile lines.2 questions:1) Will my plan work? Or will t-mobile throw a fit about canceling service for some reason?2) Anyone know why I am being charged ~$90 in tax? I understand that is how it works when you purchase a device on EIP that has monthly credits or trade-in credits, but this offer is a simple down payment and then $3/month. How can they charge sales tax on an amount that is much higher than the actual sales price?
$90 in tax has nothing to do being financed or not. Whichever state you reside want its tax based on pre-discounted/rebates etc..

Simple Choice plan (4 old lines, 2 free lines) . Offers $12.46/mo on this (adding a line), $105 tax for me. Placed two separate orders.
Hoping I can payoff right away. $299 + $105 + $20 (40 days of service) = $425 for new phone.

I am debating on 256GB iPhone 15 plus from this deal for $430, or 256GB iPhone Air for $605 in another thread. Any suggestions please. Thanks.

Can I buy this ... and activate a new line, 3 days later pay off the remaining balance of $72, wait one month until phone unlocks? I don't need new line. What's the unlock policy? Just need new phone. Tia

i thought t-mobile did away with paying off devices early and keeping the eip rate?i just don't want to get tricked into paying for a line for 24 months. if someone could help clarify that would be great!

In addition to the above being answered, if you are keeping the phone on TMobile, does it matter if I cancel the new line early, pay off the phone, and just swap out sim cards for another TMobile line?

After that Verizon deal earlier in the month, this seems only meh or just bad, especially for new line/add a line.

What we got from the Verizon deal by comparison,
4 free iPhone 17 Pro.
$300 Verizon e-gift card (we're going to use it towards our Verizon monthly bill)
activation fees waived, saved us $160.
$125/month after taxes/surcharges for 4 lines.
Our out-of-pocket cost was the $362 to cover the sales tax on the iPhones. (or really just $62 when you consider the $300 e-gift card)
Ironically, we switch from T-Mobile where we were paying the same monthly to go to Verizon. It was a no-brainer.

I went to local Costco which had a Tmobile Kiosk. I have the OnePlan with Tmobile and was trading in a Google Pixel 8. They said they had a promo trade-in valuation of $300 toward any new phone for my particular plan. The new iphone17 was $830. $830 - $300 = $530. Unlike the Tmobile stores or Tmobile online, the Costco Tmobile Kiosk waives the $35 activation fee. Then he said I would get a $100 Costco gift card in 3 months by email! That brings down the cost to $430, before taxes on the original price, of course. If I were to switch out of my One Plan to a newer plan, they would have given me a bigger trade in value for even more off a new phone, but the monthly rates would be more after you include the taxes and fees. Also jumping to a new plan would mean losing our free lines if we don't pay for them (more on that below). I kept our OnePlan.

But no need to be a new customer, no need to add a line.

BTW, I also got a free cell phone line because of some apparent loyalty bonus...Check your T-Life App if you have had Tmobile for a while. it is the second free cell phone line we've gotten. I may be getting a third free line (they may decline this one because I just got one a few days ago). If you have the old OnePlan, think twice about giving it up for some other plan. With seven lines, five original + 2 free ones (maybe a third), our usual cost is $185/month (plus $11 extra for Netflix Standard after $7 credit), which includes taxes and fees (worth about $9/line in Southern California). Two of the phones rarely uses more than 2GB data/mo, so we get $10 off for each which is why the usual cost of $185. If all five lines were to use less than 2GB/mo, then that would sometimes be as low as $155 for the month. But does not happen much.TMobile calls it the "$10 Kickback" discount for using less than 2GB/mo of data. So usually it is $185/mo (plus that $11 for Netflex Standard). We put the free lines on two phones to give them two phone numbers each... comes in handy.

The "Unlimited Welcome" plan for the $25/mo before tax and fees gets mixed reviews. The terms say "domestic roaming at 2G". Reviews say urban or high population areas cause you to be throttled to lower priority quickly, video is then capped at 480p, intermittent connections, etc. Higher level plans have better reviews but cost more.

I was on T-Mobile's Metro prepaid plan, not much difference. Verizon doesn't have 2G, I don't think any carrier still uses it. 4G is the slowest network Verizon operates. I don't know what you're reading.

I did notice better signal, it was pretty common for me to only get 1–2 bars with T-Mobile's network where I live, ATT wasn't much better when I had them in the past. Verizon is a stable 4 bars.
