TurboTax is offering any edition of tax software for free if you use and only use their Mobile app and site for filing of 2025 taxes. This is not the TurboTax free product for low income customers but for anyone and any editions of their software.

https://turbotax.intuit.com/perso.../turbotax/

However, there are many caveats:
  1. You must file using their mobile app and site (If you continue or move to the desktop, they'll charge you the full amount)
  2. You must finish filing by Feb. 28, 2026. If you file after that date, they'll charge the full rate.
  3. The free rate only applies to the DIY service. If you opt for the expert products, the free rate will no longer apply.
  4. Must not have used TurboTax products for the 2024 tax filing
Typical Intuit gotchas but if you can work within their limits, you can file your tax for free using the higher end edition of their products.

It seems I missed the yearly Amazon deal which was normally $45 for Deluxe State and Federal.

The best price looks to $55 on Amazon. Anyone know of a better deal?
You may know this already but somewhere I read a comment (can't find it now to give credit where due) that you can use your "slow shipping" digital credits towards Turbotax software. Wish I knew that earlier as I would have saved more of them for this. FWIW.

They constantly try to upsell you while they lobby congress to keep the IRS from producing their own free software.

FreeTaxUSA, Cash App Taxes, OLT.com are cheap or free options out there that handle most tax situations with transparent and crystal clear pricing.
For the life of me, I don't understand how these companies have managed to successfully lobby the government to no allow the IRS to produce tax filing software. After all, everyone who pays tax, pays tax, right? So, taxpayers using an IRS free tax filing product are not mooching off anyone else.

At least in my state, the state government provides free state tax filing, regardless of income.

Can you import last years H&R data on the app? Apart from personal information, lot of the garbage W2 fields are retained when you import. Additionally good for things like carryover losses and estimated tax penalty calculation.

Personally - I would not want to use software developed by IRS (except for simple taxes). Feds don't know how to write good user interfaces. And if you needed help, forget it.

Did you mean free state tax preparation or filing? Free state tax prep is useless since you have to then replicate all the federal information.

I cannot stress this enough - DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY. When people make statements like this without details, those statements are useless.

My fed/state tax returns were over 200 pages last year using Turbo Tax Premier... I'll pass on mobile filing.
What exactly is generating those 200 pages?

Note that if you do try the Bluestacks route to emulate the Android app to a PC, you have to use a 64-bit installation. TurboTax apears to not be compatible with 32bit. I personally got it to work with Bluestacks 5 (5.22.153.1028) Android 13 64-bit.

For those who will owe taxes, you can file by Feb 28, but you don't have to make the payment before the tax deadline.

In same boat and wondering the same thing. Can always try making a new account and see if it's caught? I believe it clearly showed $0 filing in the costs so unless that changes at the absolute end it may work out?
Used the same account as last year and it clearly wants to charge $79 on the review so you maybe unlocked the deal

Try making a new account? You definitely can't use the same account

I made a new account for 2024 taxes to get last year's deal, though I don't remember the language about not creating a new account. And as others have said, I started in the app, then switched to the computer to do everything, then switched back to the app to file. I wonder if I can go back to the account used for 2023 taxes to qualify.

Have you tried again this year? I legitimately qualified last year and did the same with primarily filling out on my desktop. Hoping new account works out for this year. So far it seems fine but maybe they catch it after filing?

I went back to the original account used in 2023, clicked a few boxes, then skipped ahead to review so I could place the "order" and get a confirmation. So based on the email I received, it looks like it worked:

Did you not hear about the "Direct File" program? The federal government passed legislation for this when Democrats last had control of Congress and the presidency. The software was in pilot mode for people from certain states last year and got rave reviews for being quick and simple. Elon Musk/Trump/DOGE killed the program.

I did. Unfortunately, it wasn't offered in my state during the pilot program. And didn't it also have some sort of income limit too?
