TurboTax is offering any edition of tax software for free if you use and only use their Mobile app and site for filing of 2025 taxes. This is not the TurboTax free product for low income customers but for anyone and any editions of their software.

https://turbotax.intuit.com/perso.../turbotax/

However, there are many caveats:
  1. You must file using their mobile app and site (If you continue or move to the desktop, they'll charge you the full amount)
  2. You must finish filing by Feb. 28, 2026. If you file after that date, they'll charge the full rate.
  3. The free rate only applies to the DIY service. If you opt for the expert products, the free rate will no longer apply.
  4. Must not have used TurboTax products for the 2024 tax filing
Typical Intuit gotchas but if you can work within their limits, you can file your tax for free using the higher end edition of their products.

I did. Unfortunately, it wasn't offered in my state during the pilot program. And didn't it also have some sort of income limit too?
I don't recall income limits, but there were limits on what forms you could do. My state was included in the pilot program, but I needed a 2008 mortgage loan repayment form that meant I couldn't try it. I was really looking forward to this year when it opened up more, but it'll be a long time before it comes back now.

I cannot imagine trying to do my tax return on my phone unless the return is super simple.
This is targeting "the youth" with some summer job or minor crypto income.

I used this deal last year and plan to use it again this year. Last year, I was able to complete and file my return using the desktop version of the website, and I was also able to submit my return after the deadline stated in the deal. Everything appears to be behaving the same way this year, so I'm posting the steps I used to get around the mobile app requirement.
Step 1: Start your return in the mobile app.
Step 2: In the app, upgrade TurboTax to whatever level you need. In my case, I needed Premium and a state return. To trigger the Premium upgrade, I went to the Income section and attempted to add rental income, then started my state return.
Step 3: In the app, go to the File tab and proceed to Step 1, where it asks you to pay. Make sure all the upgrades you want (e.g., Premium and State) are included and showing as free. If everything looks correct, proceed to checkout. Once completed, you should receive a confirmation email.
At this point, you should be able to open the desktop version of the website and continue working on your taxes there. Finally, if things work the same way as last year, as long as you complete the checkout process described above before February 28, you should still be able to submit your return after that date.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.
Filing taxes should be free. TurboTax has lobbied against every measure that would return agency to the individual.

You're a legend! Thank you for the advice. This seems to have worked for me, to be determined I suppose once I get through the rest. I had to download the app, enter my personal info, add a W-2, trigger premium by saying I needed Schedule E (rental property), then went to Step 3 and it allowed me to check out and it was $0 for premier + state
I have used TT for years, but my personal computers are getting too old for Windows 11, so I'll just do it on the web version. Not preferred but not the end of the world. And as an FYI for those looking for Schedule E for rentals, TT Deluxe works fine, they just always upsell you for Premier bc they are greedy dirtbags. I stick with them bc for some reason one year like 8 years ago TT gave me like $400 more back than TaxAct/H&R, so in my mind I think they are better, but in reality they're all crooked.

How are you using it again for free? It says only if you didn't use TT last year. What's the workaround?

Did not work for me with an existing account. When going to Step 1 on file & pay it wants to charge me TT Online Premium 2025 $69.30 & state return $39.

this. Phones have their place for sure, but for filing taxes? Only in a world where the tax is way more simple than it is now.

you all seem to miss the point. You start on phone, work it through web. and then when its time to file, you just have to go back to phone and hit submit.

From Turbotax website in the link.
You're eligible for this offer when you start and file your taxes in the TurboTax or Credit Karma mobile app by February 28. If you switch to doing your taxes using a web browser instead of the app, we'll show you a reminder that you must file in the app to redeem the offer. If you choose not to file in the app, the cost of TurboTax will go back to regular pricing, which is based on your tax situation.
So you just have to start with the app and move to web to do everything, then when it comes to actually filing, just go back to phone and hit submit.
