I bought one of these, and I hate it. It's not that you can't sideload apps (you can't), it's that it has a different operating system, so a lot of the Apps that work on every other Fire TV Stick and Cube no longer work.
You search for the apps, and they don't even show as available. I am not talking about sketchy third-party apps; I am talking about regular apps.
It's so bad Amazon has frozen reviews on this product, so I can't even warn people not to buy (I would not have purchased, had I known the above). It has nothing to do with piracy either; that's not what I am complaining about.
You can still buy a Firestick MAX that works, but for how long, who knows? Perhaps companies will migrate to the new OS, but for now I would stay away.

Also DNS block updates from Amazon the second you get it; you can set up a PiHole server or just register for a free OpenDNS account and block the necessary domains there and point the stick to that.
Been running two 4Ks for a few years now (when Woot was offloading them for like $11) and had to replace one that bricked itself somehow with an ONN 4K box. As tweakable as the ONN is, I still for some reason prefer the Firesticks set to auto launch Kodi at startup.

Buy this only if you want to have another piece of unused crap in your junk drawer or if you collect useless crap for craps sake. Some say get the ONN. I do not concur.
Both Amerzon and google TV are facing pressure to stop unauthorized use of the product. If they can see what apps are installed and prevent some from being installed, would also mean they are spying on you more than for just interest based adds.
I grow skeptical just how long this war with users will end. I would consider looking for open sourced options or cheap China boxes. As far as I know China does not report what apps you are using or prevent you from using it.
Amerzon and Googletv have kind of jumped the shark as of late IMHO and it is time we vote with our money and look for other options. It was bad enough putting up with the adds on the home screen, but when they impose the gatekeeper mentality, you don't have to ask me twice if I will buy another device. No.. I wont buy, I vote with my money.
You might as well get the Apple TV at this point if you want performance and a locked down ecosystem. Most TV sets are "smart" of some type, so little is gained with a vega os based device. It is more like punishment for daring to do more than they want you to do.
