I hear it's a good remake. Good graphics overhaul, doesn't stray much from the original gameplay.
But with so much backlogs nowadays, I don't know if anyone has time to replay games on nostalgia alone. If you've never played the original, I think MGS3/MGSDelta is always a good game.

I loved these games growing up. I had a few on the original PS and maybe a couple on PS2. Is this worth it for the nostalgia effect?

That's how Kojima games are. They're not traditional video games but more of a video game/anime

Almost every Hideo Kojima / Metal Gear game starts off with heavy exposition, remember that this is the man with the record for the longest ever cutscene in a video game ever. The over the top cinematic story is part of the experience. If you enjoy the game, the Metal Gear series on the whole has a pretty extensive lore.
