I agree that you're taking a chance with a battery from a 5-6 year old laptop. 50Wh capacity is modest and if it's at 50-70% health it will be noticeable (and it will degrade from there).
CPU is mediocre by today's standard as it is still Skylake class. Passmark is 2059/5943 (1C/MC). You won't see major improvement from Intel until 11th gen Tiger Lake (i5-1135G7, 2619/9404) or 12th gen Alder Lake-U like i5-1235U (3108/12720), but those are priced accordingly. Intel N100 is close at 1906/5431 and it's fanless, and i3-N305 is obviously faster if one can use more than 4 cores. The cheap Ryzen 5 7520U (Zen2 Mendocino) is 2412/9052.
Aluminum chassis, backlit keyboard, Ethernet port, and Thunderbolt 3 port are pluses. Probably some bonus gooch in the heatsink fan too.
All available screens are 1080p IPS (or better). IIRC on the lesser ProBook 440 G6 (same gen CPU) one could still spec a 768p TN screen for the unvalued employees.
Most 840 G7 uses 10th gen Intel (like the i5-1031U) which is around the same speed as the 8th gen. I'm using a i5-10210U right now and I can feel it struggle at times. The G8 (11th gen Intel) and later are better because Intel finally broke the 14nm curse and could make incremental improvements (by adding more transistors). The EliteBook 845 with Ryzen is also worth considering, 845 G7 was released mid-2020 and you can get 6 or 8 Zen 2 cores, and 845 G8 from 2021 has up to 8 Zen 3 cores.

I contacted SONY for a replacement and was told that since Woot.com is a "Liquidation Site" and not actually Amazon.com itself, that purchases from it are not covered under the SONY Warranty.
It is standard industry practice that warranty periods for new computers start from the date of purchase if the owner can present a receipt with the serial number on it, otherwise warranty starts on the day of manufacture (usually with 2-3 extra months to accommodate for shipping and retail). Two people bought new but apparently old stock ROG PC and an Asus laptop, and since Woot does not track serial number on invoices like proper electronic retailers do, they got zero warranty for their new PCs [reddit.com].
On a Woot forum thread [woot.com] for a (NEW) Altec Lansing speaker listed with 1 year manufacturer's warranty, "[some poster claimed to be] the brand owner and manufacturer for all Altec Lansing speakers, this model is only distributed to a very short list of retailers and was never promoted anywhere near this retail. These units did not come from us or any of our retail partners, we cannot guarantee the authenticity of these products and we will not honor any warranty replacements for this products purchased on woot", later added "as the manufacturer we will not honor any orders for any Altec Lansing products sold on Woot. These offers did not come from our suppliers or retailers". Woot Staff never responded.
In a 2022 thread on a new Altec speaker [woot.com] (which has bad Amazon reviews due to crappy battery) "shipped by iRecertify", a wooter said it didn't make sense, then that brand owner above said "iRecertify is a refurbishing center, they do not sell new Altec Lansing products." (as if they knew who iRecertify was) then came back 6 months later in 2023 to ask "Did the item come in a new box when you ordered it?". I guess iRecertify bought those dying speakers from Altec promising to rip out the retail packaging but instead sold it as new through Woot, and soon Altec was flooded with warranty claims from people they bought it from Woot/Amazon. Fun times.
I think some time after that 2024 incident, Woot started using their 90 day warranty broadly for most products. I think some manufacturers will still honor the warranty. For this refurb HP laptop it doesn't matter, as 90d is more than reasonable (more than the many eBay listings).
Oh, and people have gotten deactivated or "already in use" Windows/Office keys [reddit.com].
And that's not the worst of Woot. But I still shop there often but be aware of where their products come from. Google "okaysou amazon lawsuit" for some fun reads: Okaysou air purifier went bankrupt (sued by Levoit over patent), owes Amazon Credit Services over $500K, and a bunch of Okaysou purifiers ended up on Woot, with Woot warranty.
