The wire inside your walls is solid. (stiff, cracks if bent a lot). This is stranded. (flexible, no cracks)

It's a different kind of wire with higher electrical resistance than what's inside the walls.

Short version:

14 gauge = safely handle 13-15 amps depending on length

12 gauge = 15-20 (same as a modern home outlet)

Kinda cool. Only 14g which is a bummer.

It is ETL certified which is good.

Would have purchased a couple if it was at least 12 gauge.

I'm curious about the concern about it being only 14 g. That's typically the gauge of the 15 A circuit wiring in a home that this will mostly be used to plug into.

Solid and stranded wire of the same cross-sectional area (what gauge measures) have equivalent resistance, until very high frequencies (where surface area matters).

With two cables of matching outer diameter, one solid and one stranded, the stranded one would have slightly less copper / lower area, but that's not how gauge is measured.

If you can measure a difference in resistance between same length, same gauge stranded and Romex, the stranded is either truly 14 gauge, or cheaper copper-plated aluminum vs. solid copper (~50% higher resistance).

So I think the others said it best. I just prefer a 12g for all extension cords.

Less likely to be issues with voltage drop over the distance. Even though this is a very short cord, I am betting most will be use to break out other extension cords so a 12g would be the best choice.

I have a few 3 plug whips like this in 12g but I thought a 6 plug version would be a nice to have.

Good for short-term outdoor use. For permanent setups, a dedicated outdoor-rated power solution would still be safer.😃

It would be fine if you had a dedicated use case like Christmas decor lights. Not so great to try to use for something heavy duty though.

I know when I'm putting together some heavy duty power, I always trust DHSNNGLANESIS to make sure I'm safe.

Not UL listed which is a shame because this looks like a quality product.

It us ETL listed......ETL stands for Electrical Testing Laboratories, which is part of Intertek, a global testing and inspection leader. ETL does not create its own standards; instead, it tests products against existing standards developed by organizations like UL and ANSI.
