I'm traveling to my parents house in Ohio for the holidays and I don't even want to think about how old their surge protectors are. Great timing on this deal as Amazon will deliver these today (and I leave for Ohio tomorrow). Thank you OP!

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank TealMaid7482

The clamping voltage is pretty good, 330/400/400. At this price I'd def recommend it over a regular power strip. At full price, I chose to pay for one of their ISOBAR series surge protectors.

That said, if people are looking for surge protection, I'd rather pay $140-$150 for a type 2, whole panel protector. I know that layered protection is recommended, but that's where I'd start. Just my 2c.

Regardless, this is a good deal.

If you're talking about a whole house surge protector that gets installed inside or right outside of the main electrical panel, I'm actually in the market for one. Can you share which one you recommend and what I need to look out for in regards to specs, installation etc? TIA!

I guess Eaton acquired Tripp Lite in 2021 and I'm the last one to know.

Has the Tripp Lite quality remained the same since then? Hopefully they're not going to just strip the good Tripp Lite name. 😬

You're right. This is useful information, and I don't know why it always gets omitted. https://tripplite.eaton.com/~TLP1208SAT

I bought my UPS in 2014 from Tripp-Lite. I bought a similar Tripp-Lite UPS in 2024 for my younger son. The quality of the two units appears identical.

What I hear is that Tripp-LIte is superior to other makers (APC, CyberPower, etc). This fits with my experience.

If available for your brand of panel I'd try to find one that snaps in to an empty slot. Easiest for installation.

Can anyone comment on the other option that is about $46.07 - that comes with two USB ports? I don't really understand the joules and similar specifications, but I feel like having built in USB ports would be a lot more useful for most people these days than the other option

USB charging standards keep changing. Easier to upgrade when it's not built in.

Which UPS did you get in 2024? I'm looking to get one too. Thanks in advance!

I have a main 400A meter base outside my home, and two separate 200A main breaker panels in my garage. I also have a sub panel for my pool equipment outside. A type 1 whole house protector is installed before the main service and requires to get the electrical company involved to shut off the power to the house. I didn't do that.

I installed a CHSPT2ULTRA on each panel/sub panel, so 4 in total. A little too much? Probably. I likely would have been find putting one in for the main but we have bad lightning storms year round.
This is a type 2 protector that requires a 2x50A breaker (which adds to the cost). It's very easy to install as a DIY as long as you cut off the power from the main. There are a few other alternatives but this one is highly reviewed and at a fair price.

Inside the house, I am protecting anything of value with tripp lite isobars, either power strips or the 2 plug blocks that go straight into the receptacle (eg behind a TV on the wall). The clamping voltage is supposed to show how much voltage it will allow before tripping it, so the higher the number (eg 800), the less protection. That's why I said that this isn't bad at all. Isobars are usually 300/300/300.

There's a guy on Reddit who feels very strongly that the type 3 (power strip style) surge protectors are not needed and a waste of money as long as you have a whole house surge protector. I'd rather spend a bit of extra cash, call it insurance. So type 2 on the panel + type 3 at the receptacle is the layered approach I mentioned.

Thanks for sharing this. Can I DM you further about this so I don't derail this thread?

In the mean time I have a slightly different version of the same Tripp Lite for my home theater setup. I have a 98" mini led, tivo Roamio, Oppo 103D bluray player, Panasonic 4k blu ray player and a samsung surround sound bar all plugged into it. Do you think it's sufficient enough to protect them in case of a surge or should I replace it with the different version in this thread? They look the same differences being one listed here ends in SAT and mine ends in TELTV.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0035PQ...=UTF8&th=1 (my version)

I live in Las Vegas and have never experienced a surge but would like to cover all the bases just like you nevertheless.. Will also get a whole home surge protector very soon as well.

Please do... although I'm not sure since the app redesign a few months ago where to find DMs.
