Good Wifi Mesh for 1Gig Fiber Internet

1,410 913 Yesterday at 11:06 AM
We just got fiber finally installed. My current wifi mesh system caps out at 300 Mbps (Deco M9 Plus). Looking to get a faster mesh system. The current one gets close to it's max, about 300 Mbps at about 20 feet away with no walls. But the furthest hop over about 50 feet away in the office where one of the pucks is goes through several walls and a bathroom and drops to about 50 Mbps on a good day.

I don't have an easy option to run hardline ethernet that 50ft from the fiber switch to the office. I figured the mesh wifi is the best option I have. What's the best one to utilize? Or is there anything else that would work in my situation? I don't need the full gig in the office, but several hundred Mbps would sure help because as soon as you VPN in you lose a lot of speed. No option to move teh fiber switch either, it's stuck in the living room point 50 ft away.

eero Pro 6E ($329 3pk) and Pro 7 ($449 2pk) are both well regarded. The Pro versions of eero are significantly better than models without Pro in the name.

Other options include Asus Zen Wifi ET9 ($279 for a 2pk at amazon, $299 3pk).

Nest Wifi Pro 6E 3pk $299

Netgear Orbi generally perform well but are typically overpriced.
The Orbi 370 RBE373 is on sale for $282 but this model is only dual band.
The older Orbi RBK663 is only wifi 6 so it won't be as fast but is tri band and you can get 3 nodes for $199 currently.

I've never used a mesh setup. That said, I often question whether or not it's needed for people who ask about it.

I have a large house (~3,500 sq. ft., two story plus basement). One router covers wireless for not just my house but also well outside to the edges of my yard (smaller yard, but still...).

Have you considered buying a gigabit router and seeing if that sufficiently covers your wi-fi needs?

I appreciate that if you have a large estate or concrete walls or whatever, but my ignorance makes me wonder what drives the need for mesh for normal homeowners / apartment dwellers...

Well it is hard to offer suggestions without some questions but I will offer some scenarios:

Do you do a lot of gaming or streaming?

Do you use many devices that can be wired from a single location?
Most mesh systems can support 3 or more hardwired devices. I have found connecting devices to a satellite and letting the device send the traffic via the backhaul.

Do you have security cameras or other devices that upload vs download..

I have a TP-Link Deco mesh system that I left at my old house the satellites would lose connectivity when unplugged all the time.

I have a couple of Orbi systems right now and they have always worked well.

This one is NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-Band WiFi 6 Mesh Network System (RBK753P) – Router with 2 Satellite Extenders – Security Features - Coverage up to 7,500 sq. ft., 75 Devices - AX5200 (Up to 5.2Gbps)
$176.00 on sale right now on Amazon.

one thing I would look at is the weight of the system, the Orbis are fairly heavy whereas the TP Link are very light I believe that much like a power supply can use weight to help choose. A heavier unit must have a heatsink or something to cause the weight..

You really need to pick up the router to see how hefty it feels.

How big is your house did you have issues before you might want to buy a system where you can buy the satellites afterwards if you need it.
