If he's the kind of guy that wants to be out in a downpour, you'd need a multi-layer waterproof, preferably Gore-Tex, jacket - and deals on those are hard to find. But that's typically reserved for your harder core outdoor types, the kind of people who fish, golf or bike in a downpour and want to stay dry.
NOTE: I do NOT wear this in the rain. It is mostly cotton. I suppose it has some water repellent coating on it, but for rain you want a real rain jacket/shell made of a water proof material.
GREAT HOODIE - NOT A RAIN JACKET.
