These work but aren't for serious or set & forget use. They routinely stop recording and you have to reformat the sd card to get them to record again. The software is also lacking making going through the recordings less than efficient.
I have 4 of them and the problems mentioned afflicted all of them.

So I have Tapo cameras. And I need to clarify some things you said. So nowhere on TP Links site do they give proper instructions on what type of memory cards you need to use. So it turns out that there is a vetted list, and the only way to get this list, is when it kills one of your memory cards and it gives you a list of cards that work. Basically only high performance cards are required. You need something that can read write like 100mbps or faster. So I got these... Amazon Basics MicroSDXC UHS-I Class 10 Memory Card. They were cheap 64gb pair of SD cards. And it's been running and I have it set to only record when it senses motion. And it's half full and it's set to auto loop so it re records over stuff when it gets full. This was the cheapest fastest SD cards I could find. Turns out the "class 10" cards I had previously could only read write at 20-30mbps. And as you can imagine, the cards died immediately. But the faster cards are working good. It's The only thing I will say is, when I set the detection zones, it seems like the detection zones randomly change. Sometimes it's there and sometimes they get wiped clean and you have to reset the detection zone. I would say that's the only gripe I have. But I use it to let me know when people pull into the drive way and come to the front door. And it's looking out windows. And this doesn't require a subscription service. It just connects to WiFi. The big key is make sure you get a proper fast memory card.

Newer hardware versions of this model don't have the ability to send push notification only on person detection instead of all motion. Did they ever fix this?
My entire security is set around Wyze. Is this a better upgrade?
The best place for security camera recommendations is the Reddit forums, but no, this is not a worthwhile upgrade. Reolink is the low cost leader but if you're the type of person that own Apple products because you are willing to pay more for a better experience, then UniFi. UniFi was founded by former Apple executives.

Reddit is worse than this place for assistance. Loaded with wannabe experts with ego issues. You should be ashamed to even comment such a suggestion.

It depends what your needs really are.
If Wyze satisfies your current needs, this isn't necessary, but if you want to explore the Tapo lineup, these are decent cameras to try. Out of the box experience, these won't have free rich notifications ( thumbnail notification) without paying their cloud fees. However, it does really well with rtsp access and third party integrations if that is a need or a feature you would like.
I have 2 of these to watch my pets when I travel and for that usage it's great. When we travel we can see what our cat is up to and also monitor to ensure the sitter arrived. At this price it's pretty cheap!
With a microsd card you don't need a subscription, but you can't download the video unless you are on the same Wi-Fi... So if you want to pull a video down you gotta screen capture on your phone...

It's likely a bad unit or SD card. I have a bunch and haven't had that problem. Used a variety of different SD cards. Don't go for the cheapie ones, get branded cards.

Any modern SD card should be fast enough for these, I've used older Class 4 cards they worked fine. They are name branded though.
The key is getting good name branded cards. The generic and house branded (amazon basics is one) are usually low-specs and can fail with constant use (flash memory aren't meant to be rewritten over and over).
