Definitely not a deal for everyone but could fit the bill for certain use cases like - converting this to an IOT device/Raspberry PI 3 replacement. YMMV

It's a 2019 release date, and in June 2026, it will stop getting updates.

True but it seems it can be formatted to use Linux distros like 'Mint' (Open source and long-term support)

You can get Linux on a Lenovo 14e Chromebook in two main ways: either easily run it within Chrome OS for development (Crostini) via Settings > Developers > Linux setup, or for a full native install, you'll need to enable Developer Mode and flash custom firmware using tools like Mr.Chromebox for a full OS replacement, which requires caution and research on the 14e Chromebook model's compatibility. The first method is simpler and safer, while the second offers a true Linux laptop experience but carries risks. Method 1: Linux (Beta) within Chrome OS (Recommended for most users)This uses a virtual machine to run Debian Linux apps alongside Chrome OS. Open Settings: Click the time, then the Gear icon (Settings).Navigate: Go to About ChromeOS > Developers.Set up: Click Set up next to "Linux development environment".Follow Prompts: Click Next, choose a username, and set disk size (can be changed later).Install: Click Install. This takes time.Use: A terminal opens. Type sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y to update, then use sudo apt install (e.g., nano, vlc) to get apps. Method 2: Native Linux (Full Replacement)This replaces Chrome OS entirely and requires custom firmware. Check Compatibility: Verify your Lenovo 14e model supports this via resources like cultrabook.com.Enable Developer Mode: (Warning: This wipes your device) Press Ctrl+D, then Enter. Follow prompts to turn off OS verification.Install Custom Firmware: Boot into Developer Mode, open crosh (Ctrl+Alt+T), and run scripts from Mr. Chromebox to install custom BIOS/UEFI firmware.Create Bootable USB: Use a tool like Balena Etcher to put your chosen Linux distro (e.g., Lubuntu, Fedora) on a USB drive.Boot from USB: Restart, hold Esc to enter the new firmware menu, and select your USB drive to boot and install. Caution: Native installation can brick your Chromebook if done incorrectly. The built-in Linux (Beta) is much safer.

Are the RAM and hard driven upgradable? I have a couple DDR4 on hand that I don't mind throwing at it and then I would upgrade the SSD if possible and throw windows at it. I gotta research if all of this is possible.

LPDDR4 means it is soldered RAM and not upgradeable: https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/...k_Spec.pdf . You may upgrade the storage with a microsd card, but the eMMC means that the storage device is also soldered. The best thing about this unit might be the display; many units at this price point don't have full HD panels.

Doesn't sound too hard to install Linux though

Thanks for the info. I don't see many uses for me then.

If you're adventurous, you can learn how to boot from USB into a Linux OS that runs persistent from RAM - if the Developer Mode allows you to boot from USB on this particular model. OS's like AntiX that can run from RAM, are often more preferable than tolerating older, slower eMMC disks like this has.

It's a good choice if you want a cheap Chromium laptop with a nice screen, but a lot worse for those who aren't tech savvy.

If you want to install linux, better off getting a probook or similiar laptop off ebay.

According to Google the updates will continue through June 2029*. These ChromeOS devices must opt in to receive extended updates. For details, see Extended updates support
