That being said, I did fill it up about 12 hours before I brewed all the coffee with boiling water, and let it sit over night. Preheating these things goes a long way just like prechilling an insulated cooler does. If you have the foresight and time available to do it right, one of these could keep it's contents very hot for a day easily.

Have one of these and for the price, heat retention is second to none.
Air doesn't increase heat loss. Air is actually a fairly effective insulator. It's why a lot of home insulation is just mostly air. As long as the air can't engage in convection, it works as an insulator. The only advantage to no air is that liquid is more dense and therefore retains more energy than air. More energy=longer heat time in a Dewar vessel like this one, as the only place heat can escape is the lid. (In a mug, it doesn't work quite the same because more liquid means more surface area)
