I used this exact unit to hold coffee for Christmas this year, and it kept it absolutely piping hot for the 2 hour drive after making it and then the 4-5 hours I was actively pouring out of it for everyone. We drank probably 75-80% of the coffee and then I brought it home. It was still warm enough to enjoy drinking it the next day, over 24 hours after I originally filled it, and that's including the fact that 80% of the liquid that was in there was replaced with room temp air as we drank it.

That being said, I did fill it up about 12 hours before I brewed all the coffee with boiling water, and let it sit over night. Preheating these things goes a long way just like prechilling an insulated cooler does. If you have the foresight and time available to do it right, one of these could keep it's contents very hot for a day easily.

Anyone comment on the heat/cold retention on this? I have a couple of Stanley water bottles and have been disappointed

+1 on the advice to fill it with boiling water for a while and dumping it right before adding your drink. That will give you at least another 4-5 hours of usable heat. Easily. The other trick is to fill with your drink to the brim, then cap it. Air inside = heat loss. The hotter the better. Stanleys are built to tame lava - don't baby them.

Not sure who downvoted you, but I agree 100%. This is the way to do it.
Have one of these and for the price, heat retention is second to none.

Air at the top does not equate to heat loss. The way that heat travels is it goes down the metal, the inner metal is vacuum layer separated from the outer metal. In this situation air is the enemy, but if you fill it to the top, the heat travels through the water much faster than the air. The only value of filling it to the top is you have more mass of thermal battery.

As another has pointed out. Your theory is wrong.
Air doesn't increase heat loss. Air is actually a fairly effective insulator. It's why a lot of home insulation is just mostly air. As long as the air can't engage in convection, it works as an insulator. The only advantage to no air is that liquid is more dense and therefore retains more energy than air. More energy=longer heat time in a Dewar vessel like this one, as the only place heat can escape is the lid. (In a mug, it doesn't work quite the same because more liquid means more surface area)
