Echoing this same thought. I recently used some cheap thermal paste I got off eBay on an old laptop with overheating issues, and it's still running hot, so now I'm left wondering if better paste will resolve the issue. Artic MX-4 is only $5.50 on Amazon and highly reviewed (4.8 stars), so I'll probably get that.

For a couple bucks more, get something you know will work.
Old laptop? Clean out the cooling. They get caked up with dust.

Back in my day you'd have to mine the rare earth elements yourself and mix your own paste.

The title implies this wouldn't work for graphics GPUs?

When I built my last two systems I finally said dealing with paste is enough and used thermal grizzly kryosheets. Don't have to worry about the paste drying out or anything. Was just annoying keeping sheets in place as I seated the coolers.
For a few bucks more get Artic, Noctua or Thermal Grizzly. The difference is the price of a Monster drink

People still use thermal paste even after all the testing of thermal pads blowing it out of the water? Psshhh peasants!
Bad take. Pads are significantly more expensive, harder to source (Honeywell doesn't sell directly), harder to apply( need proper mounting pressure) and might not work as well if you have a water cooled loop (ptm needs to heat up to ~45° to melt properly). Thermal paste is just fine and performs similarly. Ptm does have it's benefits but it isn't a straight up replacement.

Will this work well with other chips for example like on a video game or amplifier that have heat sink

Yup. Its none conductive so it will work on anything that doesnt require liquid metal.

I personally prefer mx-4 or NT-H1. But just about every non conductive past is within a few degrees of each other. Its all down to ease of application. Do you want it to spread like butter but might oops too much out under pressure, or do you want it to spread like clay/putty and it might not spread thin enough on bit chip.

Not all pads are created equal I should've been more specific. The PTM pads are what I was referring to.
Yeah, but the Kryosheets (the z axis oriented graphene pads, not the lower performing carbonauts) are still damn good. From comparisons I've seen we're talking 1 to 2 degrees c difference. I don't know how long the phase change pads will last but the kryosheets will probably outlast any other component in a build. Though I do agree with you, either is now a much better option than any conventional paste. We've moved past that point.

Um, I think you misread what I wrote? I said I used Thermal Grizzly Kryosheets in my builds. These are the graphene pads, not phase change, but also not the lower performing carbonaut pads.

This is a good deal, but if you get a thermalright cooler they just give you their own thermal paste which has kinda made buying pastes separately irrelevant. Now if you are replacing it on an older cooler (might as well get a new one + paste included) it has its place but this is a low amount so you only get a few uses which is probably enough for most people.

Pads are much less maintenance, but this is so cheap that it's not worth the 5X upcharge unless it's going in a different type of system. Like laptops where liquid metal isn't as safe due to constant movement and you won't typically change the paste but need maximum performance.

Sadly it will prob not. Laptop cooling systems just aren't enough for gaming and intense processing. I was going to replace mine but it already has freakin liquid metal. You have to undervolt and cap the watts to do that. Easy if you have an Asus and AMD. Anything will require research for that particular laptop.

If you're just going for ultimate cheapness, I think their ID-cooling $15 heatsink comes with some Frost X25 paste https://slickdeals.net/f/19027324
