Quote from StevenWisniewski :
The auto VPN back to your home network
I have 3 questions that I couldn't find an answer to (maybe once people here receive theirs):
1. Is the auto-vpn to home routing based (it's own subnet) or bridging the devices like a regular switch?
2. What speed can the VPN to home achieve?
3. How fast can a wire guard connection be (not necessarily to the home)?

Reason I'm asking is that I used to have an old gl.inet that was great, but I got rid of it because I couldn't get wireguard to go above like 15 Mbps or so.

Also repeating hotel wifi was almost always absolutely horrible. Not even enough throughout to watch a YT video on just one connected device. I even tried forcing connecting to the hotel only over 2.4 and repeating only over 5 GHz, but that also generally made no difference. Curiously watching the same video while connected directly to the hotel wifi was usually just fine. Still poor reception and speed, but usable at least. I don't know why that was, had this issue with 2 different gl.inet travel routers in dozens of different hotels/chains over the years. I kind of gave up on them. Also some hotels seemed to block wireguard connections at the time. Now I'm hesitant if this would actually be a better experience. The captive portals were easy enough to work around thanks to Mac cloning.

Apparently I'm not staying at the same tech meccas as some here. I consider it lucky to find 100Mbps as an uplink, or more likely I'm bridging 2.4/5GHz WiFi and I don't generally have devices talking to each other across my local travel router.

AIUI, this device is about simplifying the captive portal experience and transparently connecting devices as if they were on your home network. Obviously you can do that with other devices as well, with varying degrees of tech pain. You can do it faster with other devices if you're willing to pay the price, and actually have a faster backend. Personally, I was excited to see this device at this price point and nabbed one.

Back in stock.
I tried one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09N72FMH5
Set it up with WireGuard and worked perfectly with my Gateway Ultra. Very easy to setup.
