FYI: Garmin released the inReach Mini 3 this month and this is discontinued. Still a really great product.

It does require a subscription to use, which starts at $8/mo with $40 activation fee.

You can suspend it for up to 12mo right now. They had taken away the suspension of the plan for a while. If you cancel it, you will have to pay activation again.

Thinking about it. I do a lot of backpacking in the sierras and strong enough to not get injured doing off trail shenanigans but ya never know

The lowest plan is pay per use on top of the monthly.
If you can juggle which months are active, $8/mo isn't bad.
Or risk it and just use a modern iphone.

When it comes to heated seats in cars, I agree, but this is more akin to a cellphone so the monthly fee makes sense. Garmin does not own the satellites so they have to pay as people use them. They also have to pay people to staff the emergency response center that dispatches responders. This all costs money and expecting it to be included in the purchase price is like expecting lifetime cell calls text and data to be included in the price a a new phone.

Use case: You're in an accident, car or whatever, and your cell phone is dead or whatever. This would be a low cost, easy to use backup. I occasionally hike, travel, etc. - this is small enough for me to travel with. If I use it just one time...priceless. For $8 a month, that's less than a single McDonald's meal - and healthier...so I'll skip a meal to pay for a month of service. And yes, I own the inReach Mini 2.

Fair enough, but that should be something sensible.

Even if it were $20 a year + $20 a month when you need it, people would probably feel better about it. A monthly sub is hard to rationalize for anyone who isn't trekking year round.
