Garmin inReach Mini 2 is a compact satellite communicator that stands out as a reliable off grid backup for hiking, travel, boating, and emergencies when a phone has no signal or battery. It is small enough to carry easily, supports non 911 texting, tracking, and emergency SOS, and can even work outside the country where phone satellite features may not. The main tradeoff is the subscription, which starts at $8 per month plus a $40 activation fee, with plan changes, suspension rules, and regional certification limits adding complexity. A practical pick for occasional use if the service model fits your trips.

FYI: Garmin released the inReach Mini 3 this month and this is discontinued. Still a really great product.

It does require a subscription to use, which starts at $8/mo with $40 activation fee.

It's crazy how monthly subscription has taken over what ever happened to the pay for lifetime service this gets dumb especially knowing people don't hike trek or are doing outdoors adventuring on the outback or deserts 🏜️ everyday of their lives

If I cancel and reactivate it, I still need to pay $40?

Yeah, I would rather just pay for the use. Like, give me a summer subscription option.

You can suspend it for up to 12mo right now. They had taken away the suspension of the plan for a while. If you cancel it, you will have to pay activation again.

The lowest plan is pay per use on top of the monthly.
If you can juggle which months are active, $8/mo isn't bad.
Or risk it and just use a modern iphone.

Yes. This is to deter activate-then-cancel users.

It's got a small niche market

When it comes to heated seats in cars, I agree, but this is more akin to a cellphone so the monthly fee makes sense. Garmin does not own the satellites so they have to pay as people use them. They also have to pay people to staff the emergency response center that dispatches responders. This all costs money and expecting it to be included in the purchase price is like expecting lifetime cell calls text and data to be included in the price a a new phone.

Use case: You're in an accident, car or whatever, and your cell phone is dead or whatever. This would be a low cost, easy to use backup. I occasionally hike, travel, etc. - this is small enough for me to travel with. If I use it just one time...priceless. For $8 a month, that's less than a single McDonald's meal - and healthier...so I'll skip a meal to pay for a month of service. And yes, I own the inReach Mini 2.

But people only use them once or twice a year.

Fair enough, but that should be something sensible.

Even if it were $20 a year + $20 a month when you need it, people would probably feel better about it. A monthly sub is hard to rationalize for anyone who isn't trekking year round.
