I bought the larger set deal from a couple weeks ago and they don't smell. They had a very thin residual oil coating which I disolved and wiped off with a bit of Dawn soap and a sponge then hosed them off in the backyard. They are obviously not made as well as really expensive bumper weights but these are amazingly good for the price because they are the correct diameter, the holes are all the right size (10#, 15#, 25#, 35#), they are all close enough to the stated weight, and they don't have any cracks anywhere so they work exactly as they should, yet cost 1/3 the price of "good" brands. I'm buying another pair of 25's and 35's now. Maybe older versions of these were made with a different material that had bad long-term off gassing (and issues with the 10# weight's hole being warped as per many previous comments) and that's what people are still remembering now even though the current version of these weights don't have those problems anymore, kind of like the whole Seagate HDD hard drive defect issue from 20yrs ago that every computer builder still remembers to this day.

I bought the 370 pound set of these years ago for a smoking deal of $1/lb at the time. Those have held up perfectly though I don't drop them often and never from chest or overhead height.
My original order came with weights individually bagged, inside of a box (single box per larger plates, I think). Every bag had an oily residue inside and I needed to wash each weights and let them air out for a week in, but they were fine after that. I recently bought a bunch of 10s and 25s and those were bagged and boxed similarly but the bags were clean/dry. I still washed the weights with soap but I probably didn't need to do.

TLDR - Seems like oily/smelly weights are a thing of the past for my small sample size.
