Just a word of caution...I received a G920 (Xbox version) not G29 (PS version) last time this was posted. I was able to send back and get a refund.

I need an Xbox version, will G29 not work at all?

Negative. The G29 is meant for Playstations. You will need the G920 for Xbox.

Pretty good wheel to start out. Used it for a few months then upgraded to a direct drive setup.

You can get a 920 refurb directly from the logitech website for a little less than this with the additional 15% off that splashes up when you initially browse their site. I ordered one 2 days ago for $144 shipped incl tax.

How much was budget a concern? I've seen others say the upgrade is good, but was it worth literally 3x to 4x the price to you?

Budget wasn't my main concern (within reason) since this is a hobby I really enjoy, and I treated the upgrade as a Christmas gift to myself.
I'm an engineer and geek out over data and car setups, plus I eventually want to get a track car or get into karting, so my main priority was realism. The G29 often made me feel like I was just playing an arcade game at Dave & Buster's, which was discouraging and killed the immersion. The direct drive setup is the complete opposite since it feels more like actual driving. I also really like the customization it offers over the entry level sets.
Definitely worth the jump for me. Plus, I got everything on a great Black Friday sale or refurbed, so it wasn't as expensive as one might think.

I'm in the Logitech ecosystem aside from the furniture. I'm running the RS50 base with the RS Wheel Hub and Track Wheel (perfect for F1 and I like the shape more), paired with the Pro Racing Pedals and Driving Force Shifter via the adapter. My "cockpit" is just a cheap $60 wheel stand from Amazon and an old office chair and using my living room TV and PS5.

It was 💯 real on 12/29 when I ordered. I don't have time to post a screenshot or I would. Sorry.

Why three pedals but no gear shifter?

Logitech's shifter is pretty bad. I have it and completely understand the criticisms since when shifting it can sometimes "skip" a gear. You're probably going to have better performance with the paddles, and a third party one is way better (but also more expensive)
